Fine Arts Quartet
The Fine Arts Quartet is a chamber music ensemble founded in Chicago, United States in 1946 by Leonard Sorkin and George Sopkin. The Quartet has recorded over 200 works and has toured internationally for 78 years, making it one of the longest enduring major string quartets. In its history, the Quartet has had two leaders: Leonard Sorkin, from 1946 to 1981, and Ralph Evans, from 1982 to the present. Its current members are violinists Ralph Evans and Efim Boico (who have been playing together in the Quartet since 1983), violist Gil Sharon, and cellist Niklas Schmidt. Ralph Evans (violinist)
Ralph Evans (born 1953) is an American violinist, best known as first violinist of the Fine Arts Quartet. The son of Jewish refugees from Russia and Germany, Evans began his musical studies at the age of five at the Vienna Academy of Music. He graduated cum laude from Yale University, where he studied violin with Broadus Erle. He subsequently received a doctorate from Yale in 1980. As recipient of a Fulbright Scholar Award, he continued his studies in Europe with Szymon Goldberg and Nathan Milstein. After winning the top prize in a number of major American competitions, including the 1978 Concert Artists Guild Competition in New York and the 1981 National Federation of Music Clubs National Young Artist Competition, he concertized as a soloist throughout North America and Europe. Vox Records is a budget classical record label. The name is Latin for "voice." Some Vox releases such as Peter Frankl's Debussy Piano Works and György Sándor's Complete Prokofiev Sonatas were reissued in premium vinyl boxsets by the audiophile German FSM Records Hamburg. The Brendel Complete Beethoven Sonatas were remastered from the original tapes for SACD and for HD downloads.
