Final Audition
''Final Audition'' is a Canadian musical competition television miniseries which aired on CBC Television in 1979. Premise These broadcasts featured the top 15 entrants of cigarette brand du Maurier's Search For Talent competition. The first three episodes each featured performances from five of the entrants. The five finalists from those broadcasts were featured on a live fourth episode from Toronto's Queen Elizabeth Theatre. The finalists were promised further exposure on the CBC. Scheduling This hour-long series was broadcast on Fridays at 9:00 p.m. (Eastern) from 31 March to 19 May 1978. Fred Davis (broadcaster)
Fred Davis (10 August 1921 – 5 July 1996) was a Canadian broadcaster, best known as host of the CBC Television programme ''Front Page Challenge'' for nearly all of its 38-year run. Born in Toronto, he became a trumpet player in his youth who performed at various concerts, particularly with the bands of Art Hallman and Howard Cable. At one point he was conductor of the Teentime Orchestra at CFRB radio. After serving in World War II, including performing in the Canadian Band of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force under the direction of Robert Farnon, he returned to Toronto to study broadcasting at Lorne Greene Academy of Radio Arts. His early radio career included Ottawa station CFRA since late 1946. In the early 1950s, Davis moved to television, as one of the hosts of the 1953-1954 documentary series '' On the Spot''. Du Maurier is a Canadian brand of cigarette produced by Imperial Tobacco Canada, a subsidiary of conglomerate British American Tobacco. The brand is named after Gerald du Maurier, Sir Gerald du Maurier, the noted British actor. The brand is also produced under license by the West Indian Tobacco Company in Trinidad and Tobago. History The brand launched in the United Kingdom in 1930 after actor and producer Gerald du Maurier, Sir Gerald du Maurier (father of writer Daphne du Maurier) made requests for "a cigarette less irritating to his throat". He lent his name to the creation of a cigarette brand, the royalties for which he used to pay down his substantial tax liabilities. Queen Elizabeth Theatre
The Queen Elizabeth Theatre is a performing arts venue in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Along with the Orpheum, Vancouver Playhouse, and thAnnex it is one of four facilities operated by the Vancouver Civic Theatres on behalf of the city of Vancouver (the Playhouse adjoins the QE Theatre in the same complex). ''Canadian Idol'' is a Canadian reality television competition show which aired on CTV, based on the British show '' Pop Idol''. The show was a competition to find the most talented young singer in Canada, and was hosted by Ben Mulroney. Jon Dore was the "roving reporter" for the first three seasons (appearing in comedy skits throughout the show). Elena Juatco (a season 2 contestant) assumed the role for season four, Dave Kerr had the role in season five and Jully Black in season six. The show began with a cross-Canada tour in which singers audition in front of four judges: Jake Gold of Toronto, Sass Jordan of Montreal, Quebec, Zack Werner of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Farley Flex of Ajax, Ontario. Eventually the performers were narrowed down to 10 finalists (11 in season one due to a near-tie), with each competitor performing live.
