Maranatha is sludge metal band from Ohio. The band consists of vocalist, guitarist, and drummer, Collin Simula, vocalist and bassist, Jack Huston, guitarist Darrell Chess and drummer Wes Jackson. History Maranatha started in 2011 as a solo project of Collin Simula, former drummer and bassist for Symphony in Peril and drummer for Kingsblood. Simula independently released their debut EP, ''Incarnate'', in 2012. In 2013, he independently released the second EP, ''Spiritless'', that featured Nick Nowell of The Famine. Simula added his longtime friend Jack Huston to play bass and do co-vocals. As of 2014, the band has two vocalists. The band released their debut full-length album, ''Filth'' on July 24, 2015, via New American Records. Sludge metal (also known as sludge or sludge doom) is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that originated through combining elements of doom metal and hardcore punk. It is typically harsh and abrasive, often featuring shouted vocals, heavily distorted instruments and sharply contrasting tempos. The Melvins from the US state of Washington produced the first sludge metal albums in the mid-late 1980s. Characteristics The key characteristics of both sludge and doom metal are a slow tempo combined with down-tuned, heavily- distorted guitars to deliver the heaviest feel that is possible. The drummer must be able to lead the band through the slow parts of a piece with an accurate time feel, which is much harder to achieve when compared with playing faster pieces. Hardcore punk (also known as simply hardcore) is a punk rock music genre and subculture that originated in the late 1970s.
