Robbing Cleopatra's Tomb
''Robbing Cleopatra's Tomb'' (, literally ''Cleopatra'') is an 1899 silent trick film directed by Georges Méliès. One of the earliest horror films ever made, it is about resurrecting the mummy of Cleopatra. In it, a man chops the mummy of Cleopatra into pieces, and then "produces a woman from a smoking brazier." While today director Méliès is more known for his iconic film '' A Trip to the Moon'', it was this film which caught the attention of producer Charles Urban, who released the film in the United States (under the title ''Robbing Cleopatra's Tomb''; its British release was simply titled ''Cleopatra's Tomb'') and subsequently distributed many of Méliès other films. ''The Mummy'' is a 1932 American pre-Code supernatural horror film directed by Karl Freund. The screenplay by John L. Balderston was adapted from a treatment written by Nina Wilcox Putnam and Richard Schayer. Released by Universal Studios as a part of the Universal Monsters franchise, the film stars Boris Karloff, Zita Johann, David Manners, Edward Van Sloan and Arthur Byron. In the film, Karloff stars as Imhotep, an ancient Egyptian mummy who was killed for attempting to resurrect his dead lover, Anck-es-en-Amon. After being discovered and accidentally brought to life by a team of archaeologists, he disguises himself as a modern Egyptian named Ardath Bey and searches for Anck-es-en-Amon, who he believes has been reincarnated in the modern world. John Rawlins (director)
John Rawlins (June 9, 1902 – May 20, 1997) was an American film editing, film editor and film director, director. He directed 44 films between 1932 and 1958. He was born in Long Beach, California and died in Arcadia, California. According to one obituary, he was "a prime exponent of that style, being a master of swift exposition and fast action. His no-nonsense approach also made him a fine serial director, and when given the chance of a top-budget adventure film he gave his studio one of its biggest hits in Arabian Nights." Leslie Goodwins
Leslie Goodwins (17 September 1899 – 8 January 1969) was an English film director and screenwriter. He directed nearly 100 films between 1926 and 1967, notably 27 features and shorts with Leon Errol, including the Mexican Spitfire series. His 1936 film '' Dummy Ache'' was nominated for an Academy Award in 1936 for Best Short Subject (Two-Reel). ''Dummy Ache'' was preserved by the Academy Film Archive and the Library of Congress in 2013. His 1937 film ''Should Wives Work?'' (starring Errol) was also nominated for an Academy Award in the same category. He was born in London, England and he died in Hollywood, California. Goodwins began his screen career in the waning years of silent films, as a gag writer and then director. He directed comedy stars Snub Pollard and Ben Turpin for the low-budget Weiss Brothers studio. Produced by Universal Pictures, it is the fifth entry in Universal's original ''Mummy'' franchise, serving as a sequel to ''The Mummy's Ghost'' (1944). It marks Lon Chaney Jr.'s final appearance as Kharis, an Egyptian mummy. William Christy Cabanne (April 16, 1888 – October 15, 1950) was an American film director, screenwriter, and silent film actor. Biography Born in 1888 in St. Louis, Missouri, Cabanne (pronounced CAB-a-nay) was educated at the Culver Military Academy and finished his education at the Annapolis Naval Academy. After serving in the U. S. Navy, he started his career on stage in 1908, as an actor and director. He entered the motion picture field in 1910, directing Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., Douglas Fairbanks, and becoming an assistant to pioneer director D. W. Griffith. He appeared on-screen in dozens of short films from 1911 to 1915. He became one of the more prolific directors of his time. Elliott Nugent (September 20, 1896 – August 9, 1980) was an American actor, playwright, writer, and film director. Life and career Nugent was born in Dover, Ohio, the son of actor J.C. Nugent. He attended Ohio State University. He successfully made the transition from silent film to sound film. He directed ''The Cat and the Canary (1939 film), The Cat and the Canary'' (1939), starring Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard.
