Fiji competed for the tenth time at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia. Fiji athletes competed in athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, lawn bowls and swimming. Dakota Barnaby was the one person to compete for Fiji The country won its second ever Commonwealth gold medal - its first since 1950. Fine Sani, boxing in the men's light heavyweight division, was Fiji's only medal winner at the 1982 Games, defeating Jonathan Kirisa of Uganda. The national flag of Fiji was adopted on 10 October 1970. The state arms have been slightly modified but the flag has remained the same as during Fiji's Colony of Fiji, colonial period. 1982 Commonwealth Games
The 1982 Commonwealth Games were held in Brisbane, Australia, from 30 September to 9 October 1982. The Opening Ceremony was held at the QEII Stadium (named after Elizabeth II), in the Brisbane suburb of Nathan. The QEII Stadium was also the athletics and archery events venue. Other events were held at the purpose-built Sleeman Sports Complex in Chandler. The Chairman of the 1982 Commonwealth Games was Sir Edward Williams. The 1982 Commonwealth Games Logo was designed by Hugh Edwards. The symbol is derived from the form of a bounding kangaroo. The three bands, forming stylized A's (for Australia), and is in colours which are common to flags of many Commonwealth countries. After first competing in 1938, Fiji returned to the British Empire Games in 1950 in Auckland, New Zealand. The colony sent only male competitors. They entered a total of six events in athletics, and three events in lawn bowls. The 1950 Games have been Fiji's most successful to date. Fine Sani Vea (born 19 November 1959) is a Tongan boxer. He competed in the men's light heavyweight event at the 1984 Summer Olympics, losing his first bout to Georgică Donici of Romania. Sani won a gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1982 Commonwealth Games while representing Fiji despite not having Fijian citizenship. The 2006 Commonwealth Games, officially the XVIII Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Melbourne 2006, were an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth held in Melbourne, Australia between 15 and 26 March 2006.
