Kevin Figes
Kevin Figes is a British saxophonist, flutist, bandleader, composer and filmmaker based in Bristol. Figes began playing the saxophone in 1986 at the age of 22, studying with Elton Dean in London and later attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, studying with Tim Garland. He had a notable association performing and recording with Keith Tippett. In the early 1990s, he moved to Bristol and began playing with Keith Tippett's Seedbed Orchestra. Turning professional he formed his own jazz quartet, writing and playing local gigs. In 1993, he won a touring award which took the band to London and Birmingham. In 1997, the band won a second jazz services touring award and Lottery award to produce a CD for which he wrote a new batch of tunes. Alongside these achievements he studied classical saxophone under Will Gregory and took grade 8 and then a diploma from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Eva Figes
Eva Figes (; 15 April 1932 – 28 August 2012) was an English author and feminist. Figes wrote novels, literary criticism, studies of feminism, and vivid memoirs relating to her Berlin childhood and later experiences as a Jewish refugee from Hitler's Germany. Early life and education Born Eva Unger in Berlin in 1932 to an affluent, secular Jewish family, she arrived in Britain as a refugee in 1939 with her mother Irma Unger, and her younger brother, Ernst. During Kristallnacht in November 1938, her father Emil was arrested and sent to Dachau concentration camp. He was later released after his wife offered the Nazis a large bribe and managed to escape to England to join his family in London. At least three of Figes's grandparents on both sides of the family died in concentration camps. Craig Figes (born 1978) is a British water polo player from Bristol. Figes went to Sir Bernard Lovell School in Oldland Common at the same time as Marcus Trescothick. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he competed for the Great Britain men's national water polo team in the men's event. Figes is a former geography teacher at Manchester Grammar School. He currently teaches geography at Sidcot School Sidcot School is a British co-educational independent school for boarding and day pupils, associated with the Religious Society of Friends.
