FIELDS Stores Ltd. is a Canadian discount store company owned by FHC Holdings, with 63 locations in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Northwest Territories. History The first FIELDS store was established in Vancouver in 1950 by the chain's founders, Joseph Segal and Saul "Sonny" Wosk. From there, FIELDS grew to eight stores by the time it opened a store at Capilano Mall in North Vancouver in 1968, continuing to expand across British Columbia into the 1970s with the acquisitions of several regional retailers (including several small HBC stores in smaller towns). In 1972, FIELDS purchased a subsidiary chain of hardware stores called Marshall Wells, and after further expansion into Alberta and Saskatchewan, it acquired majority ownership of the Zellers chain in 1976. A variety store (also five and dime (historic), pound shop, or dollar store) is a retail store that sells general merchandise, such as apparel, automotive parts, dry goods, toys, hardware, home furnishings, and a selection of groceries. Capilano Mall
Capilano Mall is a shopping mall in the City of North Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. It is located on Marine Drive, near the city's western border with the District of North Vancouver. It is the second largest shopping mall in the north shore, after Park Royal. The anchor tenant is Walmart. History Capilano Mall was originally built in 1967. Woolworth's then Woolco and Super-Valu were the initial anchor tenants. In 1974 an expansion added a Sears store. The mall underwent an upgrade and major expansion in 1986, and again in 2001. Also within the mall, there is also a set of two totem poles which were erected in 1986 and serves as a center piece icon in relations to its history and ties to local land. Zellers
Zellers was a Canadian discount department retail chain and is currently a brand name owned by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC). Founded in 1931 in London, Ontario, in later decades it was based in Brampton, Ontario. Zellers was acquired by HBC in 1978 before closing in 2013. A series of acquisitions and expansions allowed Zellers to reach its peak in the 1990s, with 350 stores across the country in 1999. However, fierce competition by Walmart Canada and an inability to adjust to the increasingly volatile retailing industry resulted in Zellers losing significant ground in the 2000s.
