Festus Tierney
Festus Patrick Tierney (July 1, 1899 – August 14, 1973) was a Guard (American football), guard in the National Football League. Tierney split the 1922 NFL season between the Hammond Pros and the Toledo Maroons before playing the next two season with the Minneapolis Marines/Red Jackets, Minneapolis Marines. He played his final season with the Milwaukee Badgers. Guard (American Football)
In American football, a guard (G), otherwise known as an offensive guard (OG), is an Lineman (gridiron football), offensive line player who lines up between the center (American football), center and the offensive tackle, tackles. Like other offensive line positions, guards are used primarily for Blocking (American football), blocking. Right guards (RG) is the term for the guards on the right of the offensive line, while left guards (LG) are on the left side. Notable guards in the National Football League include Chris Lindstrom (Atlanta Falcons), Quentin Nelson (Indianapolis Colts), and Joe Thuney (Chicago Bears). The guard's job is to protect the quarterback from the incoming defensive line, linemen during pass plays, as well as creating openings (holes) for the running backs to head through. 1922 NFL Season
The 1922 NFL season was the third regular season of what was now called the National Football League (NFL); the league changed its name from American Professional Football Association (APFA) on June 24, 1922. A total of 75 games were played by the 18 teams of the league, with a claimed total attendance in excess of 400,000. The league championship was won by the Canton Bulldogs, the first of two back-to back titles. Background The NFL fielded 18 teams during the season, including new league teams such as the Milwaukee Badgers, the Oorang Indians, the Racine Legion, and the Toledo Maroons.
