Fernando Carvalho
Alberto Fernando Carvalho Oliveira (born 5 February 1965) was a leading Portuguese road cyclist in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His strength was that of a great all-rounder, able to win tough mountain stages, time-trials and sprints; he was also known as a reckless descender and celebrated some spectacular crashes. As the leader of the Ruquita team, he became a well-known cyclist in Spain, although his biggest victories came in Portugal, including the Volta ao Alentejo in 1989, the Volta ao Algarve in 1989 and 1990 and the Volta a Portugal in 1990. He retired from cycling in 1994 and set up thEscola de Ciclismo Fernando CarvalhoU18 and U23 race team, racing under the Dulcetextil colours from 2004-2006 and then L.A. A race stage, leg, or heat is a unit of a race that has been divided in several parts for the reason such as length of the distance to be covered, as in a multi-day event. Usually, such a race consists of "ordinary" stages, but sometimes stages are held as an individual time trial or a team time trial. Volta A Portugal
The Volta a Portugal (), also known as Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta (), is an annual multi-stage road bicycle racing competition held in Portugal. The competition takes place during a two-week span. History The competition started in 1927, although its second edition only occurred in 1931. In 1936 and 1937 the tour did not take place. During World War II the race was cancelled between 1942 and 1945. In 1975 the competition was skipped due to the Carnation Revolution. In the period 1940–1980 the competition was staged over three weeks. Since the 1980s it was reduced to the period of two weeks. As of 2005 the race consisted only of ten stages. In the last years the race consisted of ten stages and a prologue (a short time trial that starts the race). It is still the longest competition in cycling after the three grand Tours. Road bicycle racing is the cycle sport discipline of road cycling, held primarily on Road surface, paved roads. Team Time Trial
A team time trial (TTT) is a road bicycle race in which teams of cyclists race against the clock (see individual time trial for a more detailed description of ITT events). The winning team in a TTT is determined by the comparing the times of (usually) the fourth-finishing rider in each team (though the relevant finish position can be otherwise specified in advance by the race organisers). This means that each team will try to get their first four (at least) riders across the finish line in a tight group: it is actually a disadvantage for any rider to finish far in advance of the fourth rider, as by staying back a faster rider can help the fourth rider to get a quicker time. Where a TTT is part of a stage race, it is necessary for each rider to be given a finish time that can be cumulated into the general classification timings.
