Fergie Jenkins Field is a baseball stadium located in Chatham, Ontario, Canada. It is home to the Chatham-Kent Barnstormers of the Intercounty Baseball League. The stadium is named after National Baseball Hall of Fame member and Chatham native Ferguson Jenkins History The park was originally constructed in the early 1950s and was home to several championship winning teams from the Ontario Baseball Association. the ballpark fell into disrepair in the 1970s, with the original grandstand being demolished in 1984. in more recent years the field has undergone improvements by the Friends Of Rotary Park and the Chatham Rotary Club, resulting in new grass, fencing, dugouts, scoreboard and a new main grandstand constructed in 2010. Chatham-Kent Barnstormers
The Chatham-Kent Barnstormers are an independent minor league baseball team based in Chatham, Ontario, playing in the Intercounty Baseball League (IBL). The team was founded in 2024 and play their home games at the 1,400 seat Fergie Jenkins Field. The team played its first game in franchise history on May 18, 2024, a 5-3 win over the Kitchener Panthers. History On November 23, 2022, the Intercounty Baseball League announced that it had approved an expansion application for Chatham Ontario for admittance into the league starting with the 2024 IBL season. The team's name was initially unveiled as the "Chatham-Kent Blackbirds" on January 27, 2023, but was dropped only three days later after team officials learned the term held historical derogatory use. Intercounty Baseball League
The Intercounty Baseball League (IBL) is a Canadian baseball league, comprising teams of college players and others from North America and beyond. The teams are located in Southern Ontario. The league was formed in 1919 and has enjoyed much success over its long history. Teams are run similar to a professional minor league team, providing players an opportunity to play under the same conditions, using wooden bats and minor league specification baseballs. Teams play 42 scheduled games from early May to late-August. The playoffs are best-of-five series with the championship series typically played around Labour Day. The most recent champions are the Barrie Baycats who defeated the Guelph Royals 4-0 in the 2024 Dominico Cup Final. Ferguson Arthur "Fergie" Jenkins Order of Canada, CM (born December 13, 1942) is a Canadian former professional baseball pitcher and Coach (baseball), coach. He played Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1965 to 1983 for the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers (baseball), Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox.
