Ferdi Statzer
Ferdi Statzer (né Friedrich von Statzer; 1906 – 17 June 1974) was an eminent Austrian pedagogue, pianist, conductor and composer. A native Viennese, his musical career transplanted him to Turkey, where he became an influential teacher to a generation of pianists. Early life Statzer was born in Vienna, Austria in 1906, to a father of Hungarian-Polish origin and a mother of Austrian descent. Following initial piano lessons with his mother, Statzer entered Mozarteum University of Salzburg, where his teachers included Emil von Sauer and Friedrich Wührer. After graduating in 1925, Statzer continued his music education at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, where he studied composition with Joseph Marx. Teşvikiye Mosque
The Teşvikiye Mosque is a neo-baroque structure located in the Teşvikiye neighbourhood of Şişli district in Istanbul, Turkey. History The mosque was originally commissioned in 1794 by Sultan Selim III, but most of the current mosque that stands today was completed in 1854 during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecit I. It was designed by Krikor Balyan, of the famed family of Armenian architects. It was constructed during a time when several well-known structures in Istanbul were being built or renovated, including the Ortaköy Mosque and Dolmabahçe Palace, in styles imported from Europe. Its front facade, constructed during a renovation in the late 19th century, gives it a unique appearance, with huge white columns. Alain Altinoglu
Alain Altinoglu (born 9 October 1975) is a French conductor of Armenian descent. Biography Born in Paris, into an Armenian family who were originally from Istanbul, Altinoglu studied music at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. After finishing his studies at the Conservatoire, he joined the school's faculty and became director of the conducting class there in 2014. Alain Altinoglu is one of the first conductors to conduct a production wholly, or partially composed of electronic music. In 2006 he conducted the symphonic orchestra that performed alongside the renowned Techno producer Jeff Mills' landmark recording. Ergican Saydam
Ergican Saydam (March 28, 1929 – December 21, 2009) was a Turkish pianist and piano pedagogue. He was an advocate of Turkish composers such as Cemal Reşit Rey, Ahmed Adnan Saygun, Cengiz Tanç and İlhan Usmanbaş whose music he premiered and recorded. His repertory centers around German romantic literature, particularly the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, and Robert Schumann. Biography Ergican Saydam was born on March 28, 1929, in Istanbul. He studied with Ferdi Statzer at the Istanbul Conservatory and with Friedrich Wührer in Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Munich. Sirvart Kalpakyan Karamanuk ( hy, Սիրվարդ Գալբագեան Գարամանուկ; 1 December 1912 – 20 October 2008) was an Armenian composer, pianist and teacher, living in Istanbul. Verda Erman
Verda Erman (19 December 1944 – 21 July 2014) was a Turkish pianist. Born in Istanbul in 1944, she began her career at the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory. In 1957, she was sent to study at the Conservatoire de Paris under Turkish law no. 6660 for students with "extraordinary talents." She studied under French pianist Lucette Descaves and graduated from the conservatory with the highest honors. Erman then worked with pianist Lazare Lévy to improve her skills on the piano. She also enrolled in lessons on counterpoint and harmony from French composer, Noël Gallon. She gave a series of concerts in Paris before returning to Turkey. Erman performed with the Presidential Symphony Orchestra of Turkey. She won first prize in the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition (now called the Long-Thibaud-Crespin Competition) in Paris in October 1963. Ali Darmar
Ali Cemal Darmar (born May 13, 1946) is a Turkish pianist and composer. He had studied piano with Verda Un, Ferdi Statzer and Popi Mihailides in his early years. He has a degree in Pharmacy. In 1974 he moved to Paris to study with Nadia Boulanger and Annette Dieudonne privately when he was also a registered student in Alfred Cortot's Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris - where he had studied with Germaine Mounier, Monique Deschaussées and Cécille de Brunhoff. Darmar had scholarships from UNESCO (1976) and the French government (1981). He graduated from the composition department of The Rueil-Malmaison Conservatory, under the direction of Mme Tony Aubin, then got another degree on composition from Jacques Castérède's class in the Ecole Normale De Musique. His work is clearly a gathering of the previous Turkish composers and the Neo-Romanticist movement in the late 20th century France.
