Feng Xiaoning
Feng Xiaoning (; born 1954) is a Chinese film director, screenwriter and cinematographer. He is considered a member of the "Fifth Generation" Chinese directors who graduated from the Beijing Film Academy in 1982. Feng however graduated from the Art Direction class. He is currently also a member of Chinese National Political Consultative Conference and Chinese Writers' Association. Féng (surname)
Féng () is a Chinese surname. It is 9th in the Song Dynasty '' Hundred Family Surname'' poem and is reported as the 31st most common Chinese last name in 2006. Unlike the less common Feng surname 鳳 ("phoenix" fourth tone) it is a rising second tone féng in modern Mandarin Chinese. The character itself, is made up of the character for "Horse" with an ice radical consisting of two strokes to the left that is meant to suggest speed or galloping. Historical roots The surname descended from the 15th son of King Wen of Zhou, Gao the Duke of Bi (畢公高), whose last name was Ji. During the Spring and Autumn period, an official of the Zheng kingdom, Feng Jian Zi was awarded the land of Feng (Henan province). The Jin kingdom besieged Feng and gave it to Wei Zhang Qing. ''Red River Valley'' () is a 1997 film directed by Feng Xiaoning about the British expedition to Tibet, starring Paul Kersey and Ning Jing. It was also released under the title ''A Tale of the Sacred Mountain''. A book by Peter Fleming, Ian Fleming's brother, is credited in the movie. In 1961, Fleming published ''Bayonets to Lhasa: The First Full Account of the British Invasion of Tibet in 1904''. The film won numerous prizes at China's three main award ceremonies: Huabiao, Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers. Lovers' Grief Over The Yellow River
''Lover's Grief over the Yellow River'' () is a 1999 Chinese film directed by Feng Xiaoning. It was China's official Best Foreign Language Film submission at the 72nd Academy Awards, but did not receive a nomination. Feng considers it the second of his "War and Peace" (战争与和平) trilogy. Plot The plot centers on an American pilot, played by Paul Kersey, who also starred in Feng Xiaoning's 1997 ''Red River Valley'', a film which depicted the British invasion of Tibet in 1905. During the Second Sino-Japanese War the American pilot makes a forced landing near the Great Wall in North China but is taken into the care of the Communist guerilla forces. He meets and falls in love with a young woman fighter who had been raped by the Japanese invaders. The American returns to the Yellow River after the opening of China in the 1980s. ''Purple Sunset'' () is a 2001 Chinese war drama film written and directed by Feng Xiaoning. Feng also acted as the film's cinematographer. ''Purple Sunset'' is an anti-war film set in August 1945, at the time during the Soviet invasion of Manchuria and when the Japanese were in the throes of defeat during World War II and losing control of mainland China. The film won Best Special Effects at the Huabiao Awards and Best Cinematography at the Golden Rooster Award.
