Feel The Sunshine (album)
''Feel the Sunshine'' is an album by trumpeter Hugh Ragin. It was recorded on October 19 and 20, 2001, at Sound on Sound Studios in New York City, and was released in 2002 by Justin Time Records. On the album, Ragin is joined by saxophonist Assif Tsahar, pianist Craig Taborn, bassist Jaribu Shahid, and drummer Tani Tabbal. Reception In a review for AllMusic, Paula Edelstein called the album "a diverse, stylistic gem," and wrote: "Ragin's concept behind ''Feel the Sunshine'' is one of peace in the jazz community and the world community... the songs are sequenced so that the listener's musical moods are quickly returned to the CD's thematic concept." The authors of ''The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings'' called the album "a remarkable record," and "among the best" of saxophonist Tsahar's sessions. Hugh Ragin
Hugh Ragin is an American jazz trumpeter. Career Ragin was born and raised in Houston, Texas, and began playing trumpet in his early teens, taking lessons in classical music, and was a member of the Houston All-City High School Orchestra. He received a degree in music education from the University of Houston and a degree in classical trumpet performance from Colorado State University. He continued his education in 1978 at the Creative Music Studio with Roscoe Mitchell. One year later he performed with Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith, and the Creative Orchestra at the Moers Festival in Germany. He then toured with Anthony Braxton. During the early 1980s he toured with jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson. He began an association with David Murray (saxophonist), David Murray, becoming a member of Murray's band in the 1980s. ''All About Jazz'' is a website established by Michael Ricci in 1995. A volunteer staff publishes news, album reviews, articles, videos, and listings of concerts and other events having to do with jazz. Ricci maintains a related site, ''Jazz Near You'', about local concerts and events. The Jazz Journalists Association voted ''All About Jazz'' Best Website Covering Jazz for thirteen consecutive years between 2003 and 2015, when the category was retired. In 2015, Ricci said the site received a peak of 1.3 million readers per month in 2007. Another source said that the site has over 500,000 readers around the world. Moldy Figs
Moldy figs are purist advocates of early jazz, originally those such as Rudi Blesh, Alan Lomax, and James Jones, who argued that jazz took a wrong turn in the early 1920s with developments such as the introduction of printed scores. Blesh, for example, dismissed the work of Duke Ellington as " tea dansant music" with no jazz content whatever. The term was later used by the beboppers with reference to those who preferred older jazz to bebop. During the post-World War II era there was something of a revival of "traditional" jazz, and bebop displaced swing as the "modern" music to which it was contrasted. More recently, Gene Santoro has referred to Wynton Marsalis and others, who embrace bebop but not other forms of jazz that followed it, as "latter-day moldy figs", with bebop now lying on the side of "jazz tradition".
