Federal Railroad Administration
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is an agency in the United States Department of Transportation (DOT). The agency was created by the Department of Transportation Act of 1966. The purpose of the FRA is to promulgate and enforce railroad, rail safety regulations, administer railroad assistance programs, conduct research and development in support of improved railroad safety and national rail transportation policy, provide for the rehabilitation of Northeast Corridor rail passenger service, and consolidate government support of rail transportation activities. The FRA is one of ten agencies within DOT concerned with intermodal freight transport, intermodal transportation. It operates through seven divisions under the offices of the Administrator and Deputy Administrator. Amit Bose (government Official)
Amitabha Bose is an American attorney and transportation policy advisor who served as the administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration from 2022 to 2025. Bose has served as deputy administrator since January 2021 and was confirmed by the Senate on January 12, 2022. He is the first person of South Asian descent to lead the FRA. East Palestine, Ohio, Train Derailment
On February 3, 2023, at 8:55 p.m. Eastern Time Zone, EST (UTC−05:00, UTC−5), a Norfolk Southern Railway, Norfolk Southern freight train Derailment, derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, United States. The train was carrying Dangerous goods, hazardous materials when 38 railroad car, cars derailed. Several railcars burned for more than two days and emergency crews also conducted controlled burns of several railcars, which released hydrogen chloride and phosgene into the air. Residents within a radius were evacuated. Agencies from Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia assisted in the emergency response. Railroad Classes
Railroad classes are the system by which freight railroads are designated in the United States. Railroads are assigned to Class I, II or III according to annual revenue criteria originally set by the Surface Transportation Board in 1992. With annual adjustments for inflation, the 2019 thresholds were US$504,803,294 for Class I carriers and US$40,384,263 for Class II carriers. (Smaller carriers were Class III by default.) There are six Class I freight railroad companies in the United States: BNSF Railway, CSX Transportation, Canadian National Railway, CPKC, Norfolk Southern Railway, and Union Pacific Railroad. Canadian National also operates in Canada and CPKC operates in Canada and Mexico.
