Federal Highway (Australia)
Federal Highway is a highway in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. It is a part of a motorway-standard link between Sydney and Canberra, and is also the main thoroughfare between those cities. The north-eastern end of Federal Highway is located at its junction with Hume Highway near the rural city of . It runs southwest to Canberra, the national capital of Australia, where its southwestern end is located at the intersection of Northbourne Avenue and Barton Highway. Federal Highway passes the villages of Wollogorang, and , as well as skirting the western side of the endorheic basin containing Lake George. Lake George, New South Wales
Lake George (or Weereewa in the Ngunnawal language) is an endorheic lake in south-eastern New South Wales, Australia. It is approximately north-east of Canberra located adjacent to the Federal Highway en route to and Sydney. Lake George is also the name of a locality on the western and southern edges of the lake, within the area of the Queanbeyan–Palerang Regional Council. Geography and hydrology Lake George is an endorheic lake, as it has no outflow of water to rivers and oceans. The lake is believed to be more than a million years old. Originally, small streams drained its catchment into the Yass River, but then the Lake George Escarpment rose due to major crust movement along a strong fault line, blocking this drainage and forming the lake. An endorheic basin (; also spelled endoreic basin or endorreic basin) is a drainage basin that normally retains water and allows no outflow to other external bodies of water, such as rivers or oceans, but drainage converges instead into lakes or swamps, permanent or seasonal, that equilibrate through evaporation. They are also called closed or terminal basins, internal drainage systems, or simply basins. Endorheic regions contrast with exorheic regions. Endorheic water bodies include some of the largest lakes in the world, such as the Caspian Sea, the world's largest inland body of water. Wollogorang is a locality in the Upper Lachlan Shire and Goulburn Mulwaree Council, New South Wales, Australia. A small part of the locality is in Queanbeyan–Palerang Regional Council. It is located about 35 km southwest of Goulburn and 61 km northeast of Canberra. It lies on both sides of the Federal Highway and on the southern side of the Hume Highway.
