February Papers
''February Papers'' is an album by percussionist Tony Oxley. It was recorded during February 1977 at Hampden Gurney Studios in London, and was released on LP later that year by Incus Records. On the album, Oxley is joined by guitarist Ian Brighton, violinists David Bourne and Philipp Wachsmann, and bassist Barry Guy. In 2020, the album was reissued on CD by Discus Music. Reception In a review for ''Point of Departure'', David Grundy wrote: "''February Papers'' is an intensely focused album... Broadly speaking, 'composition' here suggests arrangements of ensemble texture in quartet, trio and solo configurations, or, in the case of Oxley's solo percussion, focusing on particular surfaces or striking implements. The music is collective, non-egotistical: a rustling world of detail and blur, highly active yet somehow evasive, sounds insinuating themselves on the edge of consciousness." Tony Oxley
Tony Oxley (15 June 1938 – 26 December 2023) was an English free improvisation, free improvising drummer and electronic musician. Born in Sheffield, Oxley moved to London in 1966 and became house drummer at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club where he accompanied visiting musicians such as Joe Henderson, Lee Konitz, Charlie Mariano, Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, and Bill Evans until the early 1970s. Each year between 1969 and 1972 he topped the ''Melody Maker'' annual jazz readers poll for drummers. In 1970 Oxley helped found Incus Records, with Derek Bailey (guitarist), Derek Bailey and others; the label would go on to release more than 50 albums. In 1993 he joined a quartet with Tomasz Stańko, Bobo Stenson and Anders Jormin, and regularly released albums under his own name throughout the 2000s. Free Jazz
Free jazz, or free form in the early to mid-1970s, is a style of avant-garde jazz or an experimental approach to jazz improvisation that developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s, when musicians attempted to change or break down jazz conventions, such as regular tempos, Musical tone, tones, and chord changes. Musicians during this period believed that the bebop and modal jazz that had been played before them was too limiting, and became preoccupied with creating something new. The term "free jazz" was drawn from the 1960 Ornette Coleman recording ''Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation''. Europeans tend to favor the term "free improvisation". Incus Records
Incus Records is a British record company and record label, label founded by Derek Bailey (guitarist), Derek Bailey, Tony Oxley, Evan Parker and Michael Walters that specializes in free jazz and free improvisation, improvised music. The first release on the label was Incus Number 0 (zero), a 7 “ record with AMM LIVE, after that came Incus Number 1, ''The Topography of the Lungs'', recorded by Bailey, Parker, and percussionist Han Bennink in 1970. Walters and Oxley left the label shortly after its founding, after which it continued as a partnership between Bailey and Parker until a falling-out between the two men in the mid-1980s. Parker left in 1987. Bailey continued the label with Karen Brookman until his death in 2005. Its first CD release was ''CYRO'', a duo recording of Bailey and percussionist Cyro Baptista. ''The Tony Oxley/Alan Davie Duo'' is an album by percussionist Tony Oxley and multi-instrumentalist Alan Davie. It was recorded during 1974 and 1975 at various live and studio locations, and was initially released on vinyl on Davie's ADMW (Alan Davie Music Workshop) label. In 2003, it was reissued on CD in remastered form with two bonus tracks by the German label a/l/l, an imprint of FMP. Reception In a review for AllMusic, François Couture noted that the reissue was "a pleasure to rediscover," and stated that, with the exception of "Fish Fascinator," the album "remains fresh and challenging." The authors of ''The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings'' wrote: "There's no outstanding track, just a record of a highly sympathetic musical encounter. Philipp Wachsmann
Philipp John Paul Wachsmann (born 5 August 1944) is an African avant-garde jazz/jazz fusion violinist born in Kampala, Uganda, probably better known for having founded his own group Chamberpot. He has worked with many musicians in the free jazz idiom, including Tony Oxley, Fred van Hove, Barry Guy, Derek Bailey and Paul Rutherford, among many others. Wachsmann is especially known for playing within the electronica idiom. Barry Guy
Barry John Guy (born 22 April 1947, in London, England) is an English composer and double bass player. His range of interests encompasses early music, contemporary composition, jazz and improvisation, and he has worked with a wide variety of orchestras in the UK and Europe. He studied at the Guildhall School of Music under Buxton Orr, and later taught there. Guy came to the fore as an improvising bassist as a member of a trio with pianist Howard Riley (musician), Howard Riley and drummer Tony Oxley (Witherden, 1969). He also became an occasional member of John Stevens (drummer), John Stevens' ensembles in the 1960s and 1970s, including the Spontaneous Music Ensemble.
