Songs Written By Lights (musician)
A song is a musical composition performed by the human voice. The voice often carries the melody (a series of distinct and fixed pitches) using patterns of sound and silence. Songs have a structure, such as the common ABA form, and are usually made of sections that are repeated or performed with variation later. A song without instruments is said to be a cappella. Written words created specifically for music, or for which music is specifically created, are called lyrics. If a pre-existing poem is set to composed music in the classical tradition, it is called an art song. Songs that are sung on repeated pitches without distinct contours and patterns that rise and fall are called chants. Songs composed in a simple style that are learned informally by ear are often referred to as folk songs. Songs composed for the mass market, designed to be sung by professional singers who sell their recordings or live shows, are called popular songs. These songs, which have broad appeal, are oft ... Synth-pop Ballads
Synth-pop (short for synthesizer pop; also called techno-pop; ) is a music genre that first became prominent in the late 1970s and features the synthesizer as the dominant musical instrument. It was prefigured in the 1960s and early 1970s by the use of synthesizers in progressive rock, electronic, art rock, disco, and particularly the Krautrock of bands like Kraftwerk. It arose as a distinct genre in Japan and the United Kingdom in the post-punk era as part of the new wave movement of the late 1970s. Electronic musical synthesizers that could be used practically in a recording studio became available in the mid-1960s, and the mid-1970s saw the rise of electronic art musicians. After the breakthrough of Gary Numan in the UK Singles Chart in 1979, large numbers of artists began to enjoy success with a synthesizer-based sound in the early 1980s. In Japan, Yellow Magic Orchestra introduced the TR-808 rhythm machine to popular music, and the band would be a major influence on ... Lights (Lights EP)
''Lights'' is the self-titled debut EP by Canadian recording artist Lights, released on iTunes on July 24, 2008. It was released as a 12-inch vinyl on September 16, 2008. Background Cover art The cover art is a picture of Lights that she took in her apartment in Toronto heavily edited in a "cheap program" she owned for her computer at the time. She color-blocked and re-outlined the image rendering it to what it is. The cover led some to believe that the vinyl was a calendar, which prompted some mistakable purchases. Songs in media Beginning in February 2008, her song "February Air" was featured in a series of Old Navy television ads. The music video for the song premiered in December. Another track, "Drive My Soul", appeared during a 2008 episode of MTV's '' The Hills''. Release and reception The EP was released on July 24, 2008. A week after the song's release in Canada, the song has entered the Canadian Hot 100, debuting at number 49. In an interview, Lights said that the start of the chorus ("I just wanna run to you") sounds like crying because she was actually crying while she wrote the song. Lights said that this element could be anything you feel drives your soul and keeps you in the right path: your parents, a friend, or even something supernatural or a religious element.
