Fayetteville ( , ) is a city in and the county seat of Cumberland County, North Carolina, United States. It is best known as the home of Fort Bragg, a major U.S. Army installation northwest of the city. Fayetteville has received the All-America City Award from the National Civic League four times. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 208,501, It is the 6th-most populous city in North Carolina. Fayetteville is in the Sandhills in the western part of the Coastal Plain region, on the Cape Fear River. With an estimated population of 392,336 in 2023, the Fayetteville metropolitan area is the second- most populous in southeastern North Carolina and 142nd-most populous in the United States. The Fayetteville, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the US Office of Management and Budget (OMB), is an area consisting of three counties – Cumberland, Harnett, and Hoke – in eastern North Carolina, anchored by the city of Fayetteville. Cape Fear River
The Cape Fear River is a blackwater river in east-central North Carolina. It flows into the Atlantic Ocean near Cape Fear, from which it takes its name. The Sandhills or Carolina Sandhills is a 10-35 mi wide physiographic region within the U.S. Atlantic Coastal Plain province, along the updip (inland) margin of this province in the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
