Fawdon
Fawdon is an electoral ward of Newcastle upon Tyne, in the county of Tyne and Wear, England. It is also close to the A1 western bypass. The population of the ward is 10,890, reducing to 10,090 at the 2011 Census, 5.7% of the total population of Newcastle upon Tyne. Car ownership in the area is 53.6%, lower than the city average of 54.7%. Until 1974 it was in Northumberland. It is situated about north-by-west from Newcastle City Centre and is at the site of three colliery villages which were known as High Fawdon, Fawdon Square and Low Fawdon. Fawdon Square was the birthplace of 19th-century poet and songwriter Marshall Cresswell. Transport and shopping The Fawdon Wagonway (1818–1826) was an early cable car built by Benjamin Thompson. Fawdon Factory
The Fawdon Factory is a confectionery factory at Fawdon, in the English city of Newcastle upon Tyne. The factory was built for Rowntree's, and since 1988 has been run by Nestlé. it was Nestlé's largest UK factory after York. The building, but not any of Nestlé's business, is due to be transferred to Country Style Foods Limited (UK), Country Style Foods in 2024. History Rowntree wanted the site of 26 acres. Rowntree was struggling to get enough workers in its main factory. The Estate and Property committee of Newcastle City Council were asked to approve the proposal on Wednesday 21 July 1954. The site would be for around eight hundred workers. Rowntree employed about 10,000 people. The council voted by 38 to 25 to let Rowntree buy the land. The Labour group on Newcastle City Council had opposed the sale, as the Labour group wanted the land to be leased, not bought. Fawdon Metro Station
Fawdon is a Tyne and Wear Metro station, serving the suburbs of Fawdon and Kenton, Newcastle upon Tyne in Tyne and Wear, England. It was opened in 1981, adjacent to the level crossing carrying Fawdon Lane across the railway and with staggered platforms on either side of the level crossing. History The station is located on the route of the former Gosforth and Ponteland Light Railway, which opened on 1 May 1905. Coxlodge station, which opened three months later with the introduction of passenger services on the line, was situated where the metro station's western (eastbound) platform is today. Fawdon Wagonway
The Fawdon Wagonway was from 1818 to 1826 a long horse-drawn and partially rope-operated industrial railway in Fawdon near Newcastle upon Tyne. It was the first cable car employing a moving rope that could be picked up or released by a grip on the cars. History Fawdon Colliery was set-up around 1810, and its coal was originally transported via the Kenton and Coxlodge Waggonway to Wallsend. In 1818, the Fawdon Wagonway was built by Benjamin Thompson, one of the colliery's owning partners, on a new route to Scotswood. The line used inclined planes and stationary steam engines. The re-routing was the cause of controversial discussions between Thompson and the owners of the properties, over which the track ran. Coxlodge
Coxlodge is an area situated between Fawdon, Gosforth and Kenton in Newcastle upon Tyne, in the county of Tyne and Wear, England. Until 1974 it was in Northumberland. History Coxlodge was formerly a township in the parish of Gosforth, in 1866 Coxlodge became a separate civil parish, By order of the Local Government Board on 20 September 1872, the parishes of South Gosforth and Coxlodge were constituted into an urban district, the South Gosforth Local Board. After the Local Government Act 1894, it became the South Gosforth Urban District Council. A year later, by a Northumberland County Council order dated 14 March 1895, the title was changed again to Gosforth Urban District Council. Ponteland Railway
The Ponteland Railway was a single-track branch line, which linked Gosforth in Tyne and Wear with Ponteland in Northumberland. A sub-branch line also ran between Ponteland and Darras Hall. The branch line between South Gosforth and Ponteland opened to passengers in June 1905, with the sub-branch line to Darras Hall opening in October 1913. After proving to be unpopular, the branch line closed to passengers in June 1929. Freight services continued to serve the line until the late 1980s. Caramac is the brand name for a caramel-based confectionery created by Mackintosh's, and is manufactured by Nestlé. It was introduced in the United Kingdom in 1959 and was discontinued in 2023 and brought back for a limited period in July 2024. The name is derived from the syllabic abbreviation of ''Caramel'' and ''Mackintosh''. A similar confection is used in the covering of McVitie's Gold biscuit bar. Marshall Cresswell
Marshall Cresswell (1833-1889) was a Northumberland born miner, poet and songwriter. His experiences to and from his job in Borneo were serialised later in the local newspaper. Early life Marshall Cresswell was born on 18 January 1833 in the colliery village of Fawdon Square (now combined with other villages and suburbs to form Fawdon), the son of Thomas Cresswell and his wife Jane. After a short time at school, he left at the age of 9 and went "down the pit" like a great many at this age. After serving his apprenticeship, he became a sinker. He was working on the sinking of a new shaft for a colliery near Sherburn Station in December 1856 when he was informed that the eminent local engineer William Coulson was seeking three experienced men to go out to Borneo as "sinkers".
