Faughan (District Electoral Area)
Faughan is one of the seven district electoral areas (DEA) in Derry and Strabane, Northern Ireland. The district elects five members to Derry and Strabane District Council and contains the wards of Claudy, Eglinton, Enagh, New Buildings and Slievekirk. Faughan forms part of the Foyle constituencies for the Foyle (Assembly constituency), Northern Ireland Assembly and Foyle (UK Parliament constituency), UK Parliament. It was created for the 2014 Derry and Strabane District Council election, 2014 local elections, replacing the Rural (District Electoral Area), Rural DEA which had existed since 1985. Derry And Strabane District Council
Derry City and Strabane District Council (; Ulster-Scots: ''Derry Cittie & Stràbane Destrìck Cooncil'') is the local authority for Derry and Strabane district in Northern Ireland. It was created as part of the 2014 Northern Ireland local government reform, replacing Derry City Council and Strabane District Council. The first elections to the authority were on 22 May 2014 and it acted as a shadow authority to its two predecessors until the new district formally came into being on 1 April 2015. The name was changed from Derry and Strabane City Council on 24 February 2016. Maurice Devenney
Alderman Maurice Devenney (born 1 January 1959) is a Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) politician who was a Derry and Strabane Councillor for the Sperrin DEA from 2019 to 2023. Devenney also briefly served as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Foyle from 2014 to 2015. Career Devenney was first elected to Derry City Council in 2005 as a member for the Rural DEA, having unsuccessfully contested that district in 1997. Between 2011 and 2012, he served as Mayor of the city. He was elected to the successor council of Derry and Strabane, representing the Faughan DEA, in 2014. In October 2014, he was co-opted to the Northern Ireland Assembly to replace retiring Speaker and MLA for Foyle, Willie Hay, but resigned from the Assembly five months later to continue as a councillor. The Alliance Party of Northern Ireland (APNI), or simply Alliance, is a liberal and centrist political party in Northern Ireland. Rural was one of the five district electoral areas in Derry, Northern Ireland which existed from 1985 to 2014.
