Farris (other)
Farris is a lake on the border of Telemark and Vestfold counties in Norway. The long freshwater moraine-dammed lake is located mostly in Larvik Municipality in Vestfold, but the northwestern part of the lake is located in Siljan Municipality and Porsgrunn Municipality in Telemark. The large town of Larvik is located at the southern end of the lake. The lake would have been part of the saltwater Larviksfjorden, had it not been dammed by an end moraine left by the latest ice age. That moraine is about wide, separating the lake from the sea. There is a short river that runs through the moraine which drains the lake into the fjord. The lake Farris is a drinking water reservoir for about 170,000 people in the region. The largest island in the lake is Bjørnøya, located just east of the village of Kjose. The mineral water brand ''Farris'' is named after the lake. Telemark
Telemark () is a Counties of Norway, county and a current electoral district in Norway. Telemark borders the counties of Vestfold, Buskerud, Vestland, Rogaland and Agder. In 2020, Telemark merged with the county of Vestfold to form the county of Vestfold og Telemark. On 1 January 2024, the county of Telemark was re-established after Vestfold og Telemark was divided again. Larviksfjorden
Larviksfjorden is a fjord in Larvik Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The long fjord is about wide at its mouth where it flows out into the Skaggerak. The fjord reaches a depth of below sea level. The rivers Numedalslågen and Farriselva both discharge into the fjord. The towns Stavern and Larvik both border to the fjord. Farris (mineral Water)
Farris is a brand of mineral water produced in Larvik. It is Norway's oldest and best-selling bottled water. It has been mentioned in literature as having positive health effects. History 19th century The product originated as a spin-off from the Spas in Vestfold when Mineral cures became popular in Norway in the second half of the 19th century. In 1875 Ingebrigt Christian Holm, Dr. J.C.Holm, a doctor and health resort pioneer, discovered a spring rich with minerals close to the river Farriselva. This led to the establishing of Larvik Bad (originally ''Laurvig Bad'') in 1880, a mineral spa resort where one of the treatments offered was drinking mineralized water. Fjord
In physical geography, a fjord (also spelled fiord in New Zealand English; ) is a long, narrow sea inlet with steep sides or cliffs, created by a glacier. Fjords exist on the coasts of Antarctica, the Arctic, and surrounding landmasses of the northern and southern hemispheres. Norway's coastline is estimated to be long with its nearly 1,200 fjords, but only long excluding the fjords. Formation A true fjord is formed when a glacier cuts a U-shaped valley by ice segregation and abrasion of the surrounding bedrock. A moraine is any accumulation of unconsolidated debris (regolith and Rock (geology), rock), sometimes referred to as glacial till, that occurs in both currently and formerly glaciated regions, and that has been previously carried along by a glacier or ice sheet. It may consist of partly rounded particles ranging in size from boulders (in which case it is often referred to as boulder clay) down to gravel and sand, in a groundmass of finely-divided clayey material sometimes called glacial flour. Lateral moraines are those formed at the side of the ice flow, and terminal moraines are those formed at the foot, marking the maximum advance of the glacier.
