Folketing
The Folketing ( da, Folketinget, ; ), also known as the Parliament of Denmark or the Danish Parliament in English, is the unicameral national legislature (parliament) of the Kingdom of Denmark—Denmark proper together with the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Established in 1849, until 1953 the Folketing was the lower house of a bicameral parliament, called the Rigsdag; the upper house was Landstinget. It meets in Christiansborg Palace, on the islet of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen. The Folketing passes all laws, approves the cabinet, and supervises the work of the government. It is also responsible for adopting the state's budgets and approving the state's accounts. As set out in the Constitution of Denmark, the Folketing shares power with the reigning monarch. In practice, however, the monarch's role is limited to signing laws passed by the legislature; this must be done within 30 days of adoption. 2022 Danish General Election
General elections were held in the Kingdom of Denmark on 1 November 2022, except in the Faroe Islands, where they were held on 31 October as 1 November was a national day of mourning for victims at sea. Of the 179 members of the Folketing, 175 were elected in Denmark proper, two in the Faroes and two in Greenland. The elections were called on 5 October following an ultimatum to the government by the Social Liberal Party (which had been providing external support) due to the outcome of a report on the 2020 Danish mink cull by the Mink Commission, which was critical of the government. Voter turnout was 84% in Denmark, 48% in Greenland, and 71% in the Faroes with a combined turnout of 84% for the Realm as a whole. Bárður á Steig Nielsen (; born 16 April 1972) is a Faroese politician and businessman who serves as leader of the Union Party since 2015 and was prime minister from 2019 to 2022. He is also goalkeeper of the VÍF Vestmanna handball team and a former handball player of the Faroe Islands national team. Education and business career Bárður á Steig Nielsen has finished the first part of a Danish HD education in Management accounting from Aarhus University, School of Business and Social Sciences and has taken some of the subjects of the ''Merkonom'' education from Føroya Handilsskúli. He started his business career as an employee in the accountancy firm ''Rasmussen og Weihe'' in Tórshavn 1993–2000. 2019 Danish General Election
General elections were held in the Kingdom of Denmark on 5 June 2019 to elect all 179 members of the Folketing; 175 in Denmark proper, two in the Faroe Islands and two in Greenland. The elections took place ten days after the European Parliament elections. The elections resulted in a victory for the "red bloc", comprising parties that supported the Social Democrats' leader Mette Frederiksen as candidate for Prime Minister. Progress (Faroe Islands)
Progress ( fo, Framsókn) is a liberal, pro-Faroese independence political party on the Faroe Islands. History Founded on 9 March 2011 by Poul Michelsen and others as a breakaway from the People's Party, the party won two seats in the October 2011 election to the 33-seat Løgting. Its two MPs in this first election were Poul Michelsen and Janus Rein. However, almost a year after the election, on 6 October 2012, Rein left the party and became an independent member of the Faroese Parliament. He didn't give any clear reason to why he left the party, just that there were some disagreements between him and Poul Michelsen. On the following day, the Faroese website aktuelt.fo, which was run by the newspaper Sosialurin at that time, brought an article saying that the two MPs disagreed on whether Rein should be a candidate for the elections for the city council of Tórshavn or not. Jenis Kristian av Rana (born 7 January 1953 in Trongisvágur) is a Faroese medical practitioner and politician, serving as leader of the Centre Party since 2001. He served as minister of Foreign Affairs and Culture of the Faroe Islands from 2019 until his party's withdrawal from government in November 2022. Jenis av Rana has been elected to the Løgting (the Faroese parliament) since 1994 and has been parliamentary leader for his party since then. Jógvan á Lakjuni
Jógvan á Lakjuni (born 13 November 1952 in Fuglafjørður) is a Faroese politician, composer and teacher. He was speaker of the Faroese parliament, the Løgting, from 2011 to 2015 and from 2019 to 2022. He worked as a fisherman from 1969 to 1972. He was educated as a school teacher in 1977, and worked as a school teacher in Fuglafjørður from 1977 to 1989. During this period he also studied at the University of the Faroe Islands and since 1989 has worked as a high school teacher at Føroya Handilsskúli in Kambsdalur. Political career Jógvan á Lakjuni was elected member of the Faroese Løgting in 1998, but before that he had been substitute member several times in the period 1989 to 1996. People's Party (Faroe Islands)
The Faroese People's Party – Radical Self-Government ( fo, Hin føroyski fólkaflokkurin – radikalt sjálvstýri) is a pro-Faroese independence conservative and conservative-liberal political party on the Faroe Islands led by Beinir Johannesen. One of the four major parties, it has had eight seats in the Løgting since the 2019 election, making it the joint-largest party, but it has neither of the Faroes' seats in the Folketing. Founded in 1939 as a split from the Self-Government Party and by former members of the Business Party (Vinnuflokkurin), the party has traditionally supported greater autonomy for the Faroe Islands. Bjørt Samuelsen (2 March 1965 in Tórshavn) is a Faroese journalist, master in food science (Danish: ) and politician ( Republic). Political career She was elected for the Løgting at the 2008 Faroese general election and again in 2011. She was not elected at the 2015 elections, but kept her seat in the parliament because Høgni Hoydal was appointed minister of fisheries. Samuelsen was Ministers of Trade and Industry from 4 February until 15 September 2008. She was the first female minister of trade and industry of the Faroe Islands and as of 2019 the only one.
