Faro Railway Station
Faro station () is the main railway station in the city of Faro, Portugal, operated by . It opened on 1 July 1889. The line to the north-west is electrified, using overhead catenary. The line east, to the terminus at Vila Real de Santo António, is not. In 1999, following the creation of a rail crossing over the River Tagus at Lisbon, the Alfa Pendular high speed electric tilting train service was introduced on the Braga-Porto-Lisbon-Faro line, with through trains south of Lisbon starting in 2003. Faro currently receives Alfa Pendular, Intercities and regional trains. Vila Real De Santo António
Vila Real de Santo António () is a city, civil parish, and municipality in the Algarve, Portugal. The population in 2011 was 19,156, in an area of 61.25 km2. It is one of the few municipalities in Portugal without territorial continuity: its territory comprises two parts, with the municipal seat located in the eastern part. Vila Real de Santo António was founded after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, and largely expanded in 1774 using the same architectural and construction techniques employed in the reconstruction of Lisbon after the disaster. The 25 de Abril Bridge (, 25th of April Bridge, ) is a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon, capital of Portugal, to the municipality of Almada on the left (south) bank of the Tagus, Tagus River. Alfa Pendular
Alfa Pendular is the name of the flagship Pendolino high-speed tilting train of Portuguese state railway company Comboios de Portugal. Since the 1990's it connects the near-coastal and coastal cities of Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Santarém, Lisbon, Albufeira, and Faro, spanning from North to South, at speeds of up to 220 km/h (135 mph). The trains were assembled in Portugal by ADtranz at the former Sorefame works at Amadora, based on contracting partnership between Fiat-Ferroviaria as the main contractor and ADtranz and Siemens as the main subcontractors. Tilting Train
A tilting train is a train that has a mechanism enabling increased speed on regular rail tracks. As a train (or other vehicle) rounds a curve at speed, objects inside the train experience centrifugal force. This can cause packages to slide about or seated passengers to feel squashed by the outboard armrest, and standing passengers to lose their balance. In such excessive speeds, it generates longitudinal force that can cause the train to physically tilt on one side, eventually causing it to Derailment, derail. Tilting trains are designed to counteract this by tilting the carriages towards the inside of the curve, thus compensating for the g-force.
