Falmouth Cutter 34
The Falmouth Cutter 34 is a Canadian sailboat that was designed by Americans, American naval architect Lyle Hess as a global blue water Cruising (maritime), cruiser and first built in 1982. Hess considered it the best boat he designed. Production The design was initially built in South Africa by Ed McNeil, but production ended after about six boats had been built. The rights were acquired in 2003 by Bryan Gittins, who had done wood work for McNeil. Gittins established Channel Cutter Yachts to build the boat in Ladysmith, British Columbia, Canada, where it remains in production. Rather than ship the large and fragile moulds from South Africa to British Columbia, Gittins had McNeil build one last hull and ship that before destroying the moulds. Lyle Hess
Lyle C. Hess (1912–2002) was an American naval architect, particularly known for his Aquarius and Balboa series of boats, built by Coastal Recreation. Early life Hess was born in 1912, in Blackfoot, Idaho, one of 12 children in his family. As a child Hess carved many toy, wooden boats. His father, Frank Hess, was a general construction contractor. Frank Hess helped build the Patterson Canal in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and also did railway construction. Frank Hess then moved his family to California to pursue work. Hess's first boat was designed and built in 1928, when he was 16 years old. It was a Cruising (maritime), cruiser with a Chine (boating), hard chine hull, named ''Viajera'', with a length overall of , a cuddy cabin and of lead ballast. The Falmouth Cutter 22 (often just referred to as the Falmouth Cutter) is an American sailboat that was designed by Lyle C. Hess as a cruiser and first built in 1980. Boomkin
A boomkin, bumkin, or bumpkin is a short spar that may project either fore or aft on a sailing vessel, depending on its function. Traditionally, it was a strong, usually wooden spar extending forward over the bow of a Western sailing ship holding a block through which the tack of the foresail was passed; on some modern sailing yachts with long main booms it is a short spar extending aft from the stern anchoring a central backstay. Historically, boomkins were employed in pairs, one on either side of the vessel, often canted downwards over the main head-rail. Transom (nautical)
A transom is the vertical reinforcement which strengthens the stern of a boat. This flat termination of the stern is typically above the waterline. The term was used as far back as Middle English in the 1300s, having come from Latin ''transversus'' (transverse) via Old French ''traversain'' (set crosswise). The stern of a boat is typically vertical. It can be raked such that there is an overhang above the water, as at the bow. A reverse transom is angled from the waterline forwards.
