Fall Wind
A fall wind is a type of downslope wind. Like katabatic winds, it is driven by the flow of an elevated, high-density (usually cold) air mass into a lower-density (warmer) air mass, but the term fall wind is restricted to the cases where the cold air mass is not due to radiative cooling of a slope, but to the presence of a dense air mass at the top of a slope. A well-known example of a fall wind is the Bora in the Adriatic sea region, to the extent that the term ‘bora wind’ is sometimes used to designate a fall wind. The presence of the dense (cold) air mass at the top can be caused by various meteorological phenomena, such as the arrival of a cold front, or from the advection of cool marine air by a sea breeze. The flow of the dense air mass during fall winds events is similar to the flow of water over a dam, with a hydraulic jump found downstream. Katabatic Wind
A katabatic wind (named ) is a downslope wind caused by the flow of an elevated, high-density air mass into a lower-density air mass below under the force of gravity. The spelling catabatic is also used. Since air density is strongly dependent on temperature, the high-density air mass is usually cooler, and the katabatic winds are relatively cool or cold. Examples of katabatic winds include the downslope valley and mountain breezes, the piteraq winds of Greenland, the Bora in the Adriatic, the Bohemian Wind or ''Böhmwind'' in the Ore Mountains, the Santa Ana winds in southern California, the oroshi in Japan, or "the Barber" in New Zealand. Bora (wind)
The bora is a northerly to north-easterly katabatic wind in areas near the Adriatic Sea. Similar nomenclature is used for north-eastern winds in other littoral areas of eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea basins. A sea breeze or onshore breeze is a wind that blows in the afternoon from a large body of water toward or onto a landmass. By contrast, a land breeze or offshore breeze is a wind that blows in the night from a landmass toward or onto a large body of water. Sea breezes and land breezes are both important factors in coastal regions' prevailing winds. Sea breeze and land breeze develop due to differences in air pressure created by the differing heat capacity, heat capacities of water and dry land. Hydraulic Jump
A hydraulic jump is a phenomenon in the science of hydraulics which is frequently observed in open channel flow such as rivers and spillways. When liquid at high velocity discharges into a zone of lower velocity, a rather abrupt rise occurs in the liquid surface. The rapidly flowing liquid is abruptly slowed and increases in height, converting some of the flow's initial kinetic energy into an increase in potential energy, with some energy irreversibly lost through turbulence to heat. In an open channel flow, this manifests as the fast flow rapidly slowing and piling up on top of itself similar to how a shockwave forms. The Marinada is a fall wind occurring mostly during summer in the Urgell region of Catalonia. It blows from the south-east and usually arrives in the late afternoon. It is known by local people as a relief from the summer heat. Usage The term Marinada may sometimes be used in Catalan to refer to a sea breeze in the general sense.
