Facunda Speratti
Josefa Facunda Speratti was a Paraguayan independence activist who participated in the May 1811 revolution. She later married Fulgencio Yegros, the first head of state of an independent Paraguay. Life Facunda Speratti was the daughter of José Tomás Speratti, who had immigrated from Bergamo, Italy to Paraguay before his daughter's birth. She lived in the house of the Martínez Sáenz brothers, where the independence conspirators met to prepare the uprising, and was the girlfriend of Fulgencio Yegros, then one of the military officers fighting for Paraguayan independence. The independence of Paraguay ''de facto'' started on 14 May 1811 after the Revolution of May 14 when a local ruling junta was created. In early 1811 Paraguayan forces had repeatedly defeated the Argentine army which considered Paraguay to be a break-away province. On 12 October 1813 the Paraguayan Republic was proclaimed. Officially, independence was proclaimed only on 25 November 1842. Paraguayan independence was assured only after the Paraguayan War, when the Empire of Brazil resisted Argentine offers to divide and annex the country. Background In 1776 Spanish king Carlos III created the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata with Buenos Aires as its capital city. Fulgencio Yegros
Fulgencio Yegros y Franco de Torres (born 1780 in Quyquyhó, died 1821) was Paraguayan soldier and first head of state of independent Paraguay. The town of Yegros is named in his honor. Life Yegros was born to a family of military tradition and also pursued a military career. Grandson of governor Fulgencio Yegros y Ledesma, he studied in Asunción and joined the Spanish colonial army. He had his first combat experiences in 1802 against the Portuguese and in 1807 when he was part of the Paraguayan forces that defended Buenos Aires during British invasions of the Río de la Plata. He reached the rank of captain in 1810 and was given the governorship of Misiones. The Casa de la Independencia Museum is a history museum and historic house located in Asunción, Paraguay. The museum was inaugurated on May 14, 1965, and showcases pieces of history that date back to the independence of the country.
