FRE Records
FRE Records, a.k.a. Flood Ross Entertainment, Inc., was a Mississauga, Ontario based independent record label in the 1990s. It was originally formed by former employees Terry Flood and Derrick Ross of Enigma Records after that label's Canadian operations folded. The best-known bands on FRE were April Wine and Skydiggers. In 1996, FRE filed for bankruptcy, and many of the records that had been released on the label, including Skydiggers' ''Restless'' (one of the bestselling Canadian indie records of the 1990s), ceased to be available in record stores. In 1999, the Skydiggers recorded a new version of ''Restless'', titled '' Still Restless: The Lost Tapes'', since they still could not obtain their original master tapes from the label. Mississauga ( ), historically known as Toronto Township, Ontario, Toronto Township, is a city in the Canadian Provinces and territories of Canada, province of Ontario. Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. Independent labels such as Flying Nun Records, Flying Nun began to promote the scene across New Zealand, inspiring key college rock bands in the United States such as Pavement (band), Pavement, Pixies (band), Pixies and R.E.M. Enigma Records
Enigma Records (also known as Enigma Entertainment Corporation) was a popular rock and alternative American record label in the 1980s. History Enigma Records launched as a division of Greenworld Distribution, an independent music importer/distributor, in 1981. Four years later, in 1985, Enigma severed ties with Greenworld and became its own company. Enigma was initially located in Torrance, California, then El Segundo, California and finally Culver City, California. Enigma was founded and run by brothers William and Wesley Hein. Jim Martone joined the company in 1984. Enigma focused on punk rock, alternative, and heavy metal music though it also released techno (Synthicide Records), jazz (Intima Records) and classical music (Enigma Classics) through subsidiary labels. April Wine
April Wine is a Canadian rock band formed in 1969 and based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Led by singer-guitarist-songwriter Myles Goodwin since its inception, April Wine's first success came with its second album, '' On Record'' (1972), which reached the top 40 in Canada and yielded two hit singles: " Bad Side of the Moon", a top 20 hit in Canada; and " You Could Have Been a Lady", a number 2 song in Canada. Skydiggers are a Canadian roots rock band from Toronto formed by Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson. Since 1990, they have released 19 albums/EPs and have had a number of singles that have appeared on the Canadian charts. Their most successful album is ''Restless'', released in 1992. With a presence spanning decades, the band has appeared under a variety of different record labels and with many changes in members that form the group. The current group of six members released their most recent recording in 2017. Restless (Skydiggers Album)
''Restless'' is an album by the Canadian band Skydiggers, released in 1992. It was the band's most commercially successful release, and produced their biggest chart hit, "A Penny More". The band and album were nominated for two Juno Awards. In 1996, the album disappeared from Canadian record stores after the band's label, FRE Records, filed for bankruptcy. Although the band pursued litigation to win back the master tapes, they were not successful. As a result, in 1999, they released an alternate version of the album, '' Still Restless: The Lost Tapes''. Critical reception The ''Toronto Star'' called the album "so comfy and narcoleptic the band sounds like it's having a tough time staying awake through 11 tracks."
