FOB Sykes
The United States Department of Defense has a large number of temporary military bases in Iraq, most a type of forward operating base (FOB). Depending on their size or utility, the installations were called: Camp, Forward Operating Base (FOB), Contingency Operating Base (COB), Contingency Operating Site (COS), Combat Outpost (COP), Patrol Base (PB), Outpost, Logistic Base (Log Base), Fire Base (FB), Convoy Support Center (CSC), Logistic Support Area (LSA) and Joint Security Station (JSS). Near the end of Occupation of Iraq (2003–2011), the last several Camps and Forward Operating Bases were changed to Contingency Operating Bases and Sites. At the height of the occupation, the United States had 239,000 troops stationed in 505 bases throughout Iraq. Another 135,000 contractors were also working in Iraq. Camp Basilone
Qalat Sikar Air Base is a former Iraqi Air Force base in the Maysan Governorate of Iraq. It was captured by U.S.-led Coalition forces during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Overview Qalat Sikar Air Base was one of several Iraqi Air Force airfields in the mid-1970s which were re-built under project "Super-Base" in response to the experiences from Arab-Israeli wars in 1967 and 1973. During the war with Iran the airfield was a base for a squadron of MiG-23BN fighters, but what was going on subsequently remains undetermined. Forward Operating Base Volturno
Camp Baharia, also known as Dreamland or FOB Volturno, was a U.S. military installation that was just outside the city of Fallujah, Iraq. It was the smaller of two major U.S. military bases maintained just outside the Fallujah city limits, during the Iraq War. Etymology Camp Baharia was often referred to by U.S. soldiers by its original nickname, "Dreamland". The Forward Operating Base (FOB) was originally named FOB Volturno in 2003 by the first troops that occupied the area, 1-505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. A year later in 2004, the camp was re-named by the U.S. Marine Corps after they relieved the 82nd Airborne, using an Arabic word for ''Marine Corps'', ''mushaat al-baharia'', which translates roughly into naval infantry.
