World Aquatics, formerly known as FINA (; ), is the international federation recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for administering international competitions in water sports. It is one of several international federations which administer a given sport or discipline for both the IOC and the international community. It is based in Lausanne, Switzerland. International Olympic Committee
The International Olympic Committee (IOC; , CIO) is the international, non-governmental, sports governing body of the modern Olympic Games. Synchronised Swimming
Synchronized swimming (in British English, synchronised swimming), also known as artistic swimming, is a sport where swimmers perform a synchronized choreographed routine, accompanied by music. The sport is governed internationally by World Aquatics (formerly known as FINA). It has traditionally been a women's sport, although FINA introduced a new mixed gender duet competition that included one male swimmer in each duet at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships and European Aquatics introduced men's individual events at the 2022 European Aquatics Championships. The World Aquatics Masters Championships (also referred to as Masters Worlds) are international Aquatics championships for competitors aged 25 years or older as per World Aquatics rules (formerly known as FINA rules). Punta del Este () is a seaside city and peninsula on the Atlantic Coast in the Maldonado Department of southeastern Uruguay. The World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m), formerly known as the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), also referred to as 'short course worlds', are an international Swimming (sport), swimming competition staged by the internationally recognized governing body of the sport, World Aquatics (formerly FINA). Hal Henning
Harold W. "Hal" Henning Jr. (1919–1988) was an American dentist from Napierville Illinois, who was chair of the U.S. Olympic Swim Committee and then president of the International Swimming Federation, from 1972 through 1976. During his work with the swimming community in the 1970s, he lobbied to retain the number of swimming events in the Olympics, in 1973 reducing the total by 3 events, rather than the proposed 12. By preventing the loss of events, he helped retain media coverage time and gave a competitive advantage in Olympic competition to countries with strong, and balanced swim teams. Continuing his campaign to expand interest and coverage of swimming, he increased the number of seats for the swimming events at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, from 4400 to a total of 9000.
