The Pan African Federation of Filmmakers (Fédération Panafricaine des Cinéastes or FEPACI) is an organisation representing filmmakers from the continent of Africa, founded in 1970. Carthage Film Festival
Carthage Film Festival (Journées cinématographiques de Carthage, or JCC) is an annual film festival that takes place in Tunis, founded in 1966. It is also known by its Arabic title, ("Cinema Days of Carthage"). Initially biennial alternating with the Carthage Theatre Festival, the festival became an annual event in 2014. A directing committee chaired by the Tunisian Ministry of Culture, joined with professionals of the cinema industry, is in charge of the organization. The Carthage Film Festival has been designed as a film festival engaged in the cause of African and Arab countries and enhancing Global South cinema in general. The main prize awarded is the Tanit d'or ("Golden Tanit) named after the Carthaginian goddess Tanit. Film Resource Unit (FRU) was an independent film distributor and promoter of African cinema in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 1986 to 2008. FRU was founded in 1986. Panafrican Film And Television Festival Of Ouagadougou
The Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (, or FESPACO) is a film festival in Burkina Faso, held biennially in Ouagadougou, where the organization is based. It accepts for competition only films by African filmmakers and chiefly produced in Africa. FESPACO is scheduled in March every second year, two weeks after the last Saturday of February. Its opening night is held in the Stade du 4-Août, the national stadium. The festival offers African film professionals the chance to establish working relationships, exchange ideas, and to promote their work. FESPACO's stated aim is to "contribute to the expansion and development of African cinema as means of expression, education and awareness-raising". It has also worked to establish a market for African films and industry professionals. Lionel Ngakane
Lionel Ngakane (17 July 1928 – 26 November 2003) was a South African filmmaker and actor, who lived in exile in the United Kingdom from the 1950s until 1994, when he returned to South Africa after the end of apartheid. His 1965 film '' Jemima and Johnny'', inspired by the 1958 "race riots" in Notting Hill, London, won awards at the Venice and Rimini film festivals. In the 1960s, Ngakane was a founding member of the Pan African Federation of Filmmakers (FEPACI) and Fespaco, the Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO). Biography Ngakane was born in Pretoria, South Africa. In 1936, his family and he moved to the Sophiatown neighbourhood of Johannesburg. His father (a teacher) set up a hostel with Alan Paton, author of the 1948 novel ''Cry, The Beloved Country''. The Film Foundation
The Film Foundation is a US-based non-profit organization dedicated to film preservation and the exhibition of restored and classic cinema. It was founded by director Martin Scorsese and several other leading filmmakers in 1990. The foundation raises funds and awareness for film preservation projects and creates educational programs about film. The foundation and its partners have restored more than 900 films. Background As of 1997, more than half of all films made before 1950 had been lost, and a mere 10% of those produced in the US prior to 1929 survived. Even films made in Eastmancolor after 1950 were already deteriorating. Gadalla Gubara
Gadalla Gubara (, July 1920 – 21 August 2008) was a Sudanese Camera operator, cameraman, film producer, Film director, director and photographer. Over five decades, he produced more than 50 Documentary film, documentaries and three feature films. He was a pioneer of Cinema of Africa, African cinema, and a co-founder of both the Pan-African Federation of Filmmakers FEPACI and the Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou, FESPACO Film festival, held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. His daughter, Sara Gubara, who is a graduate of Cairo Higher Institute of Cinema, Egypt, assisted him with his later film projects, after he had lost his eyesight.
