FC Porto (swimming)
The FC Porto swimming section was founded in 1908, and to this day is one of the most decorated swimming teams in Portugal. The club competes in Campeonato Nacional de Clubes em Natação (National Club Championship in Swimming) and has achieved multiple trophies both in the men and women departments. The swimming section is part of the club heritage since its foundation, their first victory was the 'Taça Leixões' in 1908, and then the participation for the first time in the championship of Portugal occurred in 1919. Names of famous athletes like Abel Guimarães, Adriano Antunes, Alexandrina Pinto, Alíria Silva, António Antunes, António Brenha, António Maria Pereira, Aristides Silva, Edgar Santos, Joaquim Lagoa, and so many others contributed for the club early success. Futebol Clube do Porto, MHIH, OM (), commonly known as FC Porto or simply Porto, is a Portuguese professional sports club based in Porto. It is best known for the professional football team playing in the Primeira Liga, the top flight of Portuguese football. Portugal competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, United States. A delegation with a record number of 107 competitors (83 men and 24 women) participated in 79 events across 18 sports. Two medals were won, one of them being Portugal's third Olympic gold, thanks to Fernanda Ribeiro's surprise victory in the women's 10000m over the 5000m Olympic champion Wang Junxia. This third Olympic title in the athletics reinforced Portugal's strength in this sport and in particular the long-distance endurance events. Portugal competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. A dodadinal delegation of sixty four competitors participated in a new record number of fourteen sports. Portugal's only medal was its second Olympic gold ever, won by the Los Angeles 1984 women's marathon bronze medalist Rosa Mota who added the Olympic title to her European and World marathon titles.
