FAAM Airborne Laboratory
The FAAM Airborne Laboratory is an atmospheric science research facility. It is based on the Cranfield University campus alongside Cranfield Airport in Bedfordshire, England. It was formed by a collaboration between the Meteorological Office, Met Office and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) in 2001. The facility FAAM was established jointly by the Natural Environmental Research Council and the Met Office. Initial funding was provided to prepare an aircraft for instrumentation. The main aircraft used is a modified BAe 146, BAe 146-301 aircraft, registration G-LUXE, owned by NERC and operated by Directflight, Airtask. Radiometric
Radiometry is a set of techniques for measuring electromagnetic radiation, including visible light. Radiometric techniques in optics characterize the distribution of the radiation's power in space, as opposed to photometric techniques, which characterize the light's interaction with the human eye. The fundamental difference between radiometry and photometry is that radiometry gives the entire optical radiation spectrum, while photometry is limited to the visible spectrum. Radiometry is distinct from quantum techniques such as photon counting. The use of radiometers to determine the temperature of objects and gasses by measuring radiation flux is called pyrometry. Atmospheric sounding or atmospheric profiling is a measurement of vertical distribution of physical properties of the atmospheric column such as pressure, temperature, wind speed and wind direction (thus deriving wind shear), liquid water content, ozone concentration, pollution, and other properties. Such measurements are performed in a variety of ways including remote sensing and in situ observations.
