F. Bellingshausen
Faddey Faddeyevich Bellingshausen or Fabian Gottlieb Benjamin von Bellingshausen ( – ) was a Russian cartographer, explorer, and naval officer of Baltic German descent, who attained the rank of admiral. He participated in the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe, and subsequently became a leader of another circumnavigation expedition that discovered the continent of Antarctica. Like Otto von Kotzebue and Adam Johann von Krusenstern, Bellingshausen belonged to a cohort of prominent Baltic German navigators which helped Russia launch its naval expeditions. Bellingshausen was born on the island of Saaremaa (Ösel), to the . Lahetaguse is a village in Saaremaa Parish, Saare County, Estonia, on the island of Saaremaa. It is located on the northern coast of Kaugatoma Bay (part of the Baltic Sea). As of the 2011 Estonian census, 2011 census, the settlement's population was 21. Lahetaguse was the location of Lahetaguse () knight manor. Russian navigator and explorer Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen (1778–1852), the discoverer of Antarctica, was born in Lahetaguse Manor. The manor was established in 1571. Nadezhda (1802 Russian Ship)
''Nadezhda'' (or ''Nadeshda'', or ''Nadeshada'' ) was a three-masted sloop, the ex-British merchantman and slave ship ''Leander'', launched in 1799. A French privateer captured her in 1801, but she quickly came back into British hands. Private Russian parties purchased her in 1802 for the first Russian circumnavigation of the world (1803-1806), and renamed her. Although it is common to see references to the "frigate ''Nadezhda''", she was a sloop, not a frigate, and she was never a warship. Baltic Fleet
The Baltic Fleet () is the Naval fleet, fleet of the Russian Navy in the Baltic Sea. Established 18 May 1703, under Tsar Peter the Great as part of the Imperial Russian Navy, the Baltic Fleet is the oldest Russian fleet. In 1918, the fleet was inherited by the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, Russian SFSR which then founded the Soviet Union in 1922, where it was eventually known as the Twice Red Banner(ed) Baltic Fleet as part of the Soviet Navy, as during this period it gained the two awards of the Order of the Red Banner. Kreis Ösel (, ) was one of the nine subdivisions of the Governorate of Livonia of the Russian Empire. Its capital was Kuressaare (''Arensburg''). Adam Johann von Krusenstern (; 10 October 177012 August 1846) was a Russian admiral and explorer of Swedish and Baltic German descent, who led the first Russian circumnavigation of the Earth in 1803–1806. Life Krusenstern was born in Hagudi (Haggud), Harrien County, Estonia (then part of the Russian Empire) to a Baltic German noble family. His patrilineal ancestors descended from the Swedish noble family , and had remained in Estonia after Sweden ceded the country to the Russian Empire in 1721. In 1787, Krusenstern joined the Russian Imperial Navy, and served in the war against Sweden. Otto von Kotzebue (; 30 December 1787 – 15 February 1846) was a Baltic German naval officer in the Imperial Russian Navy. He commanded two naval expeditions into the Pacific for the purposes of exploration and scientific investigation. The first expedition explored Oceania and the western coast of North America and passed through the Bering Strait in search of a passage across the Arctic Ocean. His second voyage was intended as a military resupply mission to Kamchatka but again included significant explorations of the west coast of North America and Oceania. First Russian Antarctic Expedition
The First Russian Antarctic Expedition took place in 1819–1821 under the direction of Fabian Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev. The expedition aimed to reach the Southern Ocean in order to prove or disprove the existence of a suspected seventh continent, Antarctica. The sloop '' Vostok'' was under the command of Bellingshausen, while Lazarev commanded the sloop '' Mirny''. Overall, the consisted of 190 people. Due to extreme haste in equipping the voyage (the order was released on March 15, and the departure took place on July 4, 1819), it was impossible to assemble a science team. First Russian Circumnavigation
The first Russian circumnavigation of the Earth occurred between August 1803 and August 1806. It was carried out by two ships, the ''Nadezhda (1802 Russian ship), Nadezhda'' and the ''Neva (1802 Russian ship), Neva'', under the commands of Adam Johann von Krusenstern and Yuri Lisyansky, respectively. The main goal was to establish diplomatic and economic relations between Russian Empire, Russia and Japan and facilitate fur trading through China, Chinese ports. The Chinese leg of the expedition was tied to a mission and planned embassy headed by Yury Golovkin. Likewise, the party included a sizeable diplomatic delegation bound for Japan, headed by the court Chamberlain (office), chamberlain and plenipotentiary ambassador Nikolai Rezanov. Baltic Germans ( or , later ) are Germans, ethnic German inhabitants of the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea, in what today are Estonia and Latvia.
