The ''Elfstedentocht'' (; West Frisian: ''Alvestêdetocht'' , English: ''Eleven cities tour'') is a long-distance tour skating event on natural ice, almost long, which is held both as a speed skating competition (with 300 contestants) and a leisure tour (with 16,000 skaters). The ''Elfstedentocht'' is the biggest ice-skating tour in the world. The tour is held in the province of Friesland in the north of the Netherlands, leading past all eleven historical cities of the province. The tour is held at most once a year, only when the natural ice along the entire course is at least thick; sometimes on consecutive years, other times with gaps that may exceed 20 years. When the ice is suitable, the tour is announced and starts within 48 hours. The Elfstedentocht has been declared to be in danger of "extinction" due to climate change. Speed skating is a competitive form of ice skating in which the competitors race each other in travelling a certain distance on skates. Types of speed skating are long track speed skating, short track speed skating, and marathon speed skating. Bolsward
Bolsward (, West Frisian: ''Boalsert'') is a city in Súdwest-Fryslân in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. Bolsward has a population of just under 10,200. It is located 10 km W.N.W. of Sneek. History The town is founded on three artificial dwelling mounds, the first of which was built some time before Christ. During the Middle Ages, Bolsward was a trade center and port city connected to the North Sea via the Middle Sea. This connection was lost when the Middle Sea was reclaimed to form arable land. Franeker
Franeker (; fry, Frjentsjer) is one of the eleven historical cities of Friesland and capital of the municipality of Waadhoeke. It is located north of the Van Harinxmakanaal and about 20 km west of Leeuwarden. As of 1 January 2014, it had 12,781 inhabitants. Lekkum is a village in Leeuwarden municipality in the Friesland province of the Netherlands. It had a population of around 405 in January 2017. ''De Bullemolen'' in Lekkum marks the finishing point of the ''Elfstedentocht. History The village was first mentioned in the 13th century as Lackum. The etymology is unclear. De Bullemolen, Lekkum
De Bullemolen en, The Executioner's Mill is a smock mill in Lekkum, Friesland, Netherlands which was built in 1825. The mill has been restored to working order and is listed as a Rijksmonument, number 24505. History ''De Bullemolen'' was originally built at Tytsjerk, where it drained the Louwsmeer polder. It was moved in 1825 to its current position, where it drains the Litspolder. The name ''De Bullemolen'' is said to have come from the occupation of an early owner, who was the '' beul'' of Leeuwarden. ''De Bullemolen'' was one of the first windmills in Friesland to be fitted with sails that had leading edges on the Fok system. A restoration of the mill was carried out in 1968. The mill was sold on 28 March 1988 to Stichting De Fryske Mole ( en, Frisian Mills Foundation). In 1995, millwright Thijs Jellema of Birdaard carried out further restoration.
