Ełk Lake
Ełk Lake (Ełckie, , ; ) is a fresh water lake in the Masurian Lake District of Poland's Warmia-Masuria, Warmia-Mazury Province to the west of the town of Ełk. It has had recent pollution challenges. A larger lake in the lake district to the east of the town of Ełk is :pl:Selmęt Wielki, Selmęt Wielki. The lake that was created by glacial action during the Pleistocene ice age and has a maximum surface area of . Its mean depth is with as a maximum. It is divided into two distinct parts, the northern ("small", ) and southern ("large", ), by a narrows spanned by a bridge. Primarily fed by the Ełk River, a right-bank tributary of the Biebrza, Biebrza River from the south west, the lake discharges into :pl:Sunowo, Lake Sunowo to its north-west, and the smaller Lake Szarek associated with the Szarek, Ełk County, village of the same name to its west. Ełk
Ełk is a city in northeastern Poland with 61,677 inhabitants as of December 2021. It is the seat of Ełk County in the Warmian–Masurian Voivodeship. It lies on the shore of Ełk Lake, which was formed by a glacier, and is surrounded by extensive forests. It is the largest city and unofficial capital of historical Masuria. Founded in medieval times, Ełk, became a notable regional printing and publishing centre and home to the leading Polish school in Masuria since the early modern period, and in the late modern period it was a center of resistance to preserve Polish language in Masuria against Germanisation of Poles during the Partitions, Germanisation policies. It is an important rail and road junction and food industry hub in north-eastern Poland, and the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ełk.
