Ezras Torah Fund
The Ezras Torah''Der Morgen Journal'' August 29, 1915 Fund was founded on August 25, 1915 (15 Elul, 5675) at a meeting in Congregation Mishkan Israel on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The meeting was conducted by members of the Agudas HaRabbanim and the Vaad HaRabbanim of New York.''Sefer HaZikaron'' p. 3 It was an outgrowth of the Central Relief Committee (CRC) that was created to assist Orthodox Jews in Europe during World War I. The CRC had been founded in late 1914 by the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America with much help from the aforementioned rabbinical organizations. Ezras Torah's role was to specifically assist town rabbis, roshei yeshiva, and yeshivas during the upheaval years of World War I. They eventually broadened their scope to a worldwide level after the war. Orthodox Judaism
Orthodox Judaism is a collective term for the traditionalist branches of contemporary Judaism. The Orthodox Union (abbreviated OU) is one of the largest Orthodox Jewish organizations in the United States. Philip Klein (rabbi)
Philip Klein (May 22, 1849 – March 21, 1926) was a Hungarian-born rabbi who ministered in the Russian Empire and America. Life Klein was born on May 22, 1849, in Baracska, Kingdom of Hungary (1526–1867), Hungary, the son of Hermann Klein. Klein began studying at the Pressburg Yeshiva (Austria-Hungary), Pressburg Yeshiva when he was twelve and spent the next four years there. He then went to Azriel Hildesheimer, Azriel Hildesheimer's Yeshiva in Halberstadt when he was sixteen. He was appointed dean of a department in the Yeshiva shortly afterwards and spent two years there. He then went to Vienna, and in 1868 he entered the gymnasium there. He later studied at the University of Vienna. With the encouragement of Hildesheimer (who by then became Chief Rabbi of Berlin), he moved to Berlin, North German Confederation, Germany and enrolled in the Hildesheimer Rabbinical Seminary and the Humboldt University of Berlin, University of Berlin. Yosef Eliyahu Henkin
Rabbi Yosef Eliyahu Henkin (1881–1973) was a prominent Orthodox rabbi in the United States. Biography He was born in 1881 in Klimavichy, Belarus, then in the Russian Empire, and studied at the Slutzker Yeshiva under Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer. He received rabbinical ordination ('' semichah'') from Meltzer, and he was also ordained by Rabbis Yaakov Dovid Wilovsky, Boruch Ber Leibowitz and Yechiel Michel Epstein. According to Henkin's grandson, Henkin did not remember receiving ordination from Rabbi Epstein, and for his ordination from Rabbi Wilovsky he was not tested by Wilovsky himself, but by Wilovsky's son-in-law. After serving as rabbi in a number of Russian towns, he emigrated to America in 1922. In 1925 he became the director of Ezras Torah, which provided assistance to scholars.
