It has a fixed landing gear with a tail wheel and an enclosed cockpit with two seats in tandem (pilot in the rear and a passenger in the front). It is powered by a Textron-Lycoming AEIO-580-B1A engine with either a three or four-bladed tractor propeller. The aircraft was presented to the public on 22 July 2019 at AirVenture. Walter Extra is a German award-winning aerobatics, aerobatic pilot and chief aircraft designer who founded the aerobatic aircraft manufacturer Extra Flugzeugbau (Extra Aircraft Construction). Extra was trained as a mechanical engineer. He began his flight training in gliders, transitioning to powered aircraft to perform aerobatics. He built and flew a Pitts Special aircraft and later built his own Extra EA-230. Extra began designing aircraft after competing in the 1982 World Aerobatic Championships. His aircraft constructions revolutionized the aerobatics flying scene and still dominate world competitions. Aerobatics is the practice of flying maneuvers involving aircraft attitudes that are not used in conventional passenger-carrying flights. The term is a portmanteau of "aeroplane" and "acrobatics". Lycoming IO-580
The Lycoming IO-580 engine is a horizontally opposed, six-cylinder aircraft engine featuring three cylinders per side, manufactured by Lycoming Engines. There is no carburetted version of the engine, which would have been designated O-580 and therefore the base model is the IO-580. This engine family competes with the Continental IO-550 series which are also six-cylinder engines with similar power output and weight.
