Ivan Ewart
Sir William Ivan Cecil Ewart, 6th Baronet (18 July 1919 – 29 November 1995) was a decorated Northern Irish naval officer, businessman and charity worker. He succeeded his cousin as baronet in 1959. Early years Sir Ivan was the son of Major William Basil Ewart (the son of Oxford educated barrister F. W. Ewart) and Rebe Annette Grindle. Born into an Irish family of linen industrialists, their firm employed over 2,500 people, making it one of the largest manufacturers and exporters of Irish linen in the western world. Born at Derryvolgie House, Lisburn, where he resided until 1970, he was educated at Radley. He took over the running of the family business after the war. Families such as the Ewarts were referred to colloquially as the "Linenocracy" or "Linen barons." Ewart, Manitoba
Ewart is a locality in southwestern Manitoba, Canada. All that remains of the settlement is a cairn, an abandoned house, and the former schoolhouse. Little is known about the schoolhouse but it did exist as early as 1914. The Crowell School District was formed in March, 1904 encompassing the area that became known as Ewart. The arrival of the railway led to the establishment of a post office on June 10, 1907. The post office was initially named Bardal Station, as this railway stop served the nearby district of Bardal. On March 1, 1908, the post office's name was changed to Haanel. The post office was renamed Ewart on January 1, 1909, in honour of the constitutional lawyer John Skirving Ewart. Crowell School District was renamed Ewart School District in 1914. The closure of the railway caused the rapid decline of Ewart. Lieutenant-General Sir John Spencer Ewart (22 March 1861 – 19 September 1930) was a British Army officer who became Adjutant-General to the Forces, but was forced to resign over the Curragh Incident. Early life and education Ewart was born in Tatenhill near Burton-on-Trent into a distinguished Scottish family of military officers, the second son of General Sir John Alexander Ewart and Frances Stone. His father was aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria and a veteran of the Crimean War and Siege of Lucknow who lost his left arm at Cawnpore. His father was the son of Lieutenant-General John Frederick Ewart and grandson of diplomat Joseph Ewart and Sir Charles Brisbane. Peter Ewart (14 May 1767 – 15 September 1842) was a British engineer who was influential in developing the technologies of turbines and theories of thermodynamics. Biography He was son of the Church of Scotland minister of Troqueer near Dumfries, and was one of eleven children. His brother Joseph Ewart became British ambassador to Prussia; John, a doctor, became Chief Inspector of East India Company hospitals in India; and William, father of William Ewart, was business partner of Sir John Gladstone, father of William Ewart Gladstone, whose godfather he was and whom he was named after. John Ewart (architect)
John Ewart (January 31, 1788 – September 18, 1856) was a Canadian architect and businessman. He was born in Tranent, Scotland in 1788. After completing his apprenticeship in building, he moved to London around 1811. In 1816, he emigrated to New York City and moved to York (Toronto) in Upper Canada a few years later. He built a hospital and then the town's first Roman Catholic church, St. Paul's. In 1818, he built the parliament building for Upper Canada at York. In 1824, he designed the courthouse and jail for the Home District and, in 1827–31, the two-story castellated-style courthouse for the London District, Ontario. He was one of the overseers for the construction of the new parliament building after the original building burned in 1824. In 1829, he prepared the design for the original Osgoode Hall; some remodelling and additions occurred later.
