Evelien Eshuis
Eveline Luberta "Evelien" Eshuis (born 25 November 1942) is a Dutch politician who was a member of the House of Representatives in the Netherlands from 1982 to 1986. She was the first openly lesbian member of the Dutch Parliament. Biography Eshuis was born on 25 November 1942 in Amersfoort, Netherlands. She worked in Ghana for a year in 1968. From 1972 to 1975, she taught at a in Amsterdam, and she worked at a community center from 1975 to 1982. Eshuis joined the Communist Party of the Netherlands in 1974 and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1982. She came out as lesbian that same year, becoming the first openly lesbian member of Parliament in the Netherlands. Eshuis is described in ''Trouw'' as one of the most well-known LGBT politicians in the Netherlands. In Parliament, she regularly wore a pink triangle pin as a symbol of lesbian pride. ''Evelien'' is a Dutch dramedy television series made for broadcaster Net 5. Actress Kim van Kooten plays the eponymous starring role. Amstelveen () is a List of municipalities of the Netherlands, municipality in the Provinces of the Netherlands, province of North Holland, Netherlands with a population of 92.353 as of 2022. It is a suburban part of the Amsterdam metropolitan area. The municipality of Amstelveen consists of the historical villages of Bovenkerk (Amstelveen), Bovenkerk and Nes aan de Amstel. The House of Representatives (, pronounced ; commonly referred to as the ', literally "Second Chamber of the States General") is the lower house of the bicameral parliament of the Netherlands, the States General, the other one being the Senate. It has 150 seats, which are filled through elections using party-list proportional representation. Generally, the house is located in the Binnenhof in The Hague, however, it has temporarily moved to the former building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at Bezuidenhoutseweg 67 in the Hague while the Binnenhof is being renovated.
