EMD SD40-2
The EMD SD40-2 is a AAR wheel arrangement#C-C, C-C diesel–electric locomotive built by Electro-Motive Diesel, EMD from 1972 to 1989. The SD40-2 was introduced in January 1972 as part of EMD's ''EMD Dash 2, Dash 2'' series, competing against the GE U30C. Although higher-horsepower locomotives were available, including EMD's own EMD SD45-2, SD45-2, the reliability and versatility of the SD40-2 made it one of the best-selling models in EMD's history, edged out only by the EMD GP9, GP9, and was the standard of the industry for several decades after its introduction. The SD40-2 was an improvement over the EMD SD40, SD40, with modular electronic control systems similar to those of the experimental DDA40X. Peak production of the SD40-2 was in the mid-1970s. Sales of the SD40-2 began to diminish after 1981 due to the oil crisis, increased competition from GE Dash 7 Series, GE's Dash-7 series and the introduction of the EMD SD50, which was available concurrently to late SD40-2 product ...

Unit Train
A unit train, also called a block train or a trainload service, is a train in which all cars (wagons) carry the same commodity and are shipped from the same origin to the same destination, without being split up or stored en route. They are distinct from wagonload trains, composed of differing numbers of cars for various customers. Unit trains enable railways to compete more effectively with road and internal waterway transport systems. Time and money are saved by avoiding the complexities and delays that would otherwise involve assembling and disassembling trains at rail yards near the origin and destination. Unit trains are particularly efficient and economical for high-volume commodities. Since they often carry only one commodity, cars are of all the same type; often identical. Some commodities (e.g., coal) can be loaded at the origin while the train moves slowly on a loop track. The procedure is reversed at the receiving end, and because there generally is not any commodity ...

Opdyke, Illinois
Opdyke is a census-designated place in the southeastern part of Jefferson County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2020 census, its population was 236. History Opdyke was laid out in 1871, following construction of the St. Louis & Southeastern Railroad. The nearby, earlier town of Lynchburg was largely abandoned and moved to Opdyke. A part of the railroad investment in this area was funded by a mortgage of $4,525,000 by Calhoun & Opdyke of New York. The town is named for Opdyke. It is possible that the name of the village is all that they got out of the investment. The original surveys of Illinois, made around 1800, show the Goshen Road passing through what is now the center of Opdyke in a north–south direction. The road was about a quarter mile east of the north–south section road that now forms the western boundary of the village. Few traces of this road now remain, and it is not clear if the road was still present at the time of the founding of the village. Opdy ...
