Evan Lloyd (poet)
Evan Lloyd (15 April 1734 (baptised) – 26 January 1776) was a Welsh poet. Life Lloyd, who was baptised on 15 April 1734 in Llanycil, Merionethshire, Wales, was educated at Ruthin School before matriculating at Jesus College, Oxford in 1751. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1754 and a Master of Arts degree three years later, Lloyd was ordained and served curate of St Mary's Rotherhithe, London. In 1763, he became vicar of Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Wales, but he remained in London (where he enjoyed the delights of the London social life) and employed a curate in his place. Gout and rheumatism affected his later years, and he died on 26 January 1776. Works In 1766 Lloyd published three satires in verse. One (''The Powers of the Pen'') attacked literary critics. Another (''The Curate'') bewailed the position of curates and condemned bishops. Sir Evan Lloyd (died 1586), of Bodidris, Llanarmon yn Iâl, Denbighshire, was a Welsh politician, Member of Parliament. He was High Sheriff of Denbighshire and took part in the Earl of Leiceister's expedition. Life He was the eldest son of John Lloyd. He was a Justice of the Peace for Denbighshire from 1575, for Flintshire from 1579 and for Merioneth from 1583. He was appointed High Sheriff of Denbighshire for 1582-83 and custos rotulorum of Denbighshire from 1575. He was elected a Member of Parliament, Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Denbighshire (UK Parliament constituency), Denbighshire in 1584. In 1586 Lloyd, a fervent Protestant, fought for the Dutch under Robert Sidney, 1st Earl of Leicester. He died in London the following year on his way home, having been made a Knight banneret by the Earl. He was buried in his native parish on 3 March 1587. Evan Lloyd (born 28 December 2001) is a Welsh professional rugby union player who plays as a hooker for United Rugby Championship club Cardiff and the Wales national team. Early life While a pupil at Stanwell School, Lloyd played youth rugby for Penarth RFC, originally as a back row. He captained the Penarth U14 team, where he played alongside future Cardiff team mate Mason Grady. A member of the Cardiff Rugby academy, Lloyd played for Cardiff U16 and U18, as well as Pontypridd RFC and Cardiff RFC. During his time in the academy, Lloyd converted to hooker. Evan Lloyd Vaughan (c. 1709–1791) was a Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1774 to 1791. Biography Vaughan was the son of Richard Vaughan MP and his wife Margaret Lloyd, daughter of Sir Evan Lloyd of Bodidris, Denbighshire. He was educated at Eton College from 1725 to 1727 and was admitted at St John's College, Cambridge in 1728. He was Constable of Harlech Castle from July 1754 and High Sheriff of Denbighshire in 1766–7. He succeeded his brother to Corsygedol in 1775. Vaughan was unwilling to stand at Merioneth in the 1768 general election when his brother William Vaughan declined re-election. J. Pugh Pryse was returned instead and when Pryse died in January 1774, Vaughan was still reluctant to stand. However he was returned unopposed as Member of Parliament for Merioneth in the by-election on 24 February 1774.
