Evaline, Washington
Evaline is an unincorporated community in Washington, United States, south of Napavine and 3 miles north of Winlock on State Route 603. History The earliest white settlers in this area were the Urquharts and the MacDonalds. Sedate W. Porter founded the town and established the post office on Feb. 14, 1906, which was open until 1930. The Northern Pacific Railroad began operations from Kalama to Evaline, a 25 miles stretch, in 1872. The town was named after Porter's wife, Evaline. However, the name was registered misspelled as "Eveline" and the railroad company used the incorrect spelling for some time. Arts and culture The Hope Grange was founded in Evaline in March 1904. Named as such to "boost courage and hopes", a hall was built soon thereafter, and the grange officially incorporated in June 1948. Evaline Hilda Burkitt
Evaline Hilda Burkitt (19 July 1876 – 7 March 1955) was a British suffragette and member of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU). A militant activist for women's rights, she went on hunger strike in prison and was the first suffragette to be forcibly-fed. Between 1909 and 1914 she was force-fed 292 times and was the last woman to be so treated in Holloway Prison. She was a recipient of the WSPU's Hunger Strike Medal. Life and Activism Evaline Hilda Burkitt was born in Wolverhampton in 1876, the fifth of nine children born to Laura ''née'' Clews (1843–1909) and Reuben Lancelot Burkitt (1847–1928). The children were well educated, including the girls. Burkitt was interested in reading, needlework and gardening. She lived with her wealthy grandparents Clarissa and Charles Burkitt until she was 25 years old, and then rejoined her family, who had moved to Birmingham. Evaline Ness
Evaline Ness (April 24, 1911 – August 12, 1986) was an American commercial artist, illustrator, and author of children's books. She illustrated more than thirty books for young readers and wrote several of her own. She used a great variety of artistic media and methods. As an illustrator of picture books she was one of three Caldecott Medal runners-up each year from 1964 to 1966 and she won the 1967 Medal for '' Sam, Bangs and Moonshine'', which she also wrote. In 1972 she was the U.S. nominee for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award for children's illustrators. Life Ness was born Evaline Michelow in Union City, Ohio and grew up in Pontiac, Michigan. As a child she illustrated her older sister's stories with collages cut from magazine pictures. She studied at Ball State Teachers College 1931–32 to become a librarian, then at Chicago Art Institute 1933–35 to become a fashion illustrator. For a while she was also a fashion model.
