European Citizens Initiative
The European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) is a European Union (EU) mechanism aimed at increasing direct democracy by enabling "EU citizens to participate directly in the development of EU policies", introduced with the Treaty of Lisbon in 2007. This popular initiative enables one million citizens of the European Union, with a minimum number of nationals from at least seven Member state of the European Union, member states, to call directly on the European Commission to propose a legal act (notably a Directive (European Union), Directive or Regulation (European Union), Regulation) in an area where the member states have Politics of the European Union, conferred powers onto the EU level. Convention On The Future Of Europe
The Convention on the Future of the European Union, also known as the European Convention, was a body established by the European Council in December 2001 as a result of the Laeken Declaration. Inspired by the Philadelphia Convention that led to the adoption of the United States federal Constitution, its purpose was to produce a draft constitution for the European Union for the Council to finalise and adopt. European Parliament Committee On Petitions
The Committee on Petitions (PETI) is a permanent committee of the European Parliament to offer a petition process including a web portal to create and admit petitions. Its current chair, elected on 10 July 2019, is Dolors Montserrat, member of the EPP Group. The right to petition is one of the fundamental rights of the European citizen and residents. Any of these can bring forward a petition on a matter within the EU's sphere of activities. The Committee hears cases, some 1500 each year, sometimes presented in Parliament by the citizen themselves. While the Parliament attempts to resolve the issue as a mediator, it can resort to legal proceedings if necessary to resolve the citizen's dispute. The Twenty-eighth Amendment of the Constitution (Treaty of Lisbon) Act 2009 (previously bill (law), bill no. 49 of 2009) is an Amendments to the Constitution of Ireland, amendment of the Constitution of Ireland which permitted the state to ratification, ratify the Treaty of Lisbon of the European Union. The Twenty-eighth Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2008 ( bill no. 14 of 2008) was a proposed amendment to the Constitution of Ireland that was put to a referendum in 2008 (the first Lisbon referendum). The purpose of the proposed amendment was to allow the state to ratify the Treaty of Lisbon of the European Union. The amendment was rejected by voters on 12 June 2008 by a margin of 53.4% to 46.6%, with a turnout of 53.1%.
