EuroBasket 2009
The 2009 FIBA European Championship, commonly called FIBA EuroBasket 2009, was the 36th FIBA EuroBasket regional basketball championship held by FIBA Europe. The tournament, which was hosted by Poland, began on 7 September and concluded with the final on 20 September 2009. The competition served as a qualification tournament for the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey. Spain claimed their first EuroBasket title by routing Serbia 85–63 in the final. Greece captured the bronze medal with a 57–56 victory over Slovenia. The four teams to make the semi-finals, plus France and Croatia claimed the six European qualifying places for the 2010 FIBA World Championship. Spain's Pau Gasol was named the tournament MVP. Pau Gasol
Pau Gasol Sáez (, ; born July 6, 1980) is a Spanish former professional basketball player. He was a six-time NBA All-Star Game, NBA All-Star and a four-time All-NBA team selection, twice on the second team and twice on the third team. Gasol won two NBA championships, both with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2009 NBA Finals, 2009 and 2010 NBA Finals, 2010. He was the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2002 with the Memphis Grizzlies, the first non-American to win that award. He is regarded as one of the greatest power forwards of all time and one of the greatest European players of all time. He is the older brother of former NBA player Marc Gasol. Gasol was selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the third overall pick in the first round of the 2001 NBA draft, but his rights were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, Vancouver Grizzlies. Hala Arena
Hala Arena , generally called simply Arena, is an indoor sporting arena in the Grunwald district of the city of Poznań in western Poland. It is primarily used for volleyball, other indoor sports, and concerts. The venue opened in 1974 and seats approximately 5,500 people, depending on type of event. The arena hosted a preliminary round group of the EuroBasket 2009 competition. In 1985 Hala Arena hosted the Rock Arena two day festival headlined by Hanoi Rocks and Pretty Maids. Many other international rock bands played there during the PRL (Communist government) era in the 1980s, including Iron Maiden, Dire Straits, Marillion, Leonard Cohen and UFO. Hala Olivia
Hala Olivia is an arena in Gdańsk, Poland. It was designed by Maciej Gintowt and Maciej Krasiński. Construction began in 1965, and the arena was opened on 16 December 1972. It is primarily used for ice hockey and is the home of Stoczniowiec Gdansk. The basketball club Prokom Gdynia also used the facility for home Euroleague fixtures. Hala Olivia holds 5,500 people. In September 1981, the first Congress of Solidarity, the Polish trade union, was held here. 865 delegates attended the sessions. The building's exterior was completely renovated in 2016. Renovations on the interior are ongoing. This is one of the few remaining sports arenas left of this particular socialist modernism style otherwise called Brutalism. Spodek
Spodek is a multipurpose arena complex in Katowice, Poland, opened on 9 May 1971. Aside from the main dome, the complex includes a gym, an ice rink, a hotel and three large car parks. It was the largest indoor venue of its kind in Poland until it was surpassed by Tauron Arena in 2014. The Spodek hosts many important cultural and business events. Music concerts are especially common non-sport events. It can hold around 11,500 people, although this number is in practice limited to 10,000 or even 8,000 due to stage set-ups obscuring the view. Its Polish name refers to a flying saucer since its iconic shape resembles a UFO.
