Eureka Stockade (1949 Film)
''Eureka Stockade'' is a 1949 British film of the story surrounding Irish-Australian rebel and politician Peter Lalor and the gold miners' rebellion of 1854 at the Eureka Stockade in Ballarat, Victoria, in the Australian Western genre. Starring Chips Rafferty, it was produced by Ealing Studios and directed by Harry Watt, following their success with ''The Overlanders''. The movie was the most expensive film made in Australia at that time, and was a critical and commercial disappointment. It has been called "a case of a filmmaker coming off a big fat hit and given carte blanche for his next project, then picking a story that gave him full scope to spend a lot of money on production value, but it was beyond his capabilities to dramatise." John Minton (artist)
Francis John Minton (25 December 1917 – 20 January 1957) was an English painter, illustrator, stage designer and teacher. After studying in France, he became a teacher in London, and at the same time maintained a consistently large output of works. In addition to landscapes, portraits and other paintings, some of them on an unusually large scale, he built up a reputation as an illustrator of books. In the mid-1950s, Minton found himself out of sympathy with the abstract trend that was then becoming fashionable, and felt increasingly sidelined. He suffered psychological problems, self-medicated with alcohol, and in 1957 died by suicide. Meat Pie Western
Australian Western, also known as meat pie Western or kangaroo Western, is a genre of Western-style films or TV series set in the Australian outback or "the bush". Films about bushrangers (sometimes called bushranger films) are included in this genre. Some films categorised as meat-pie or Australian Westerns also fulfil the criteria for other genres, such as drama, revisionist Western, crime or thriller. A sub-genre of the Australian Western, the Northern, has been coined by the makers of ''High Ground'' (2020), to describe a film set in the Northern Territory that accurately depicts historical events in a fictionalised form, that has aspects of a thriller. The term "meat pie Western" is a play on the term Spaghetti Western, used for Italian-made Westerns. Grant Taylor (actor)
Ronald Grant Taylor (6 December 1917 – 26 January 1971) was an English-Australian actor best known as the abrasive General Henderson in the Gerry Anderson science fiction series '' UFO'' and for his lead role in '' Forty Thousand Horsemen'' (1940). Early life Taylor was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in England, but moved to Australia with his parents as a child. For a time he worked as a professional boxer in Melbourne under the name of Lance Matheson. According to a later newspaper report, he had 70 bouts, lost eight and drew 11. He reportedly also served in the Merchant Marine. Acting debut Cinesound Productions were looking for someone with wrestling skills to play the part of a gorilla in '' Gone to the Dogs'' (1939), so Taylor auditioned. He did not get the part but met Alec Kellaway who persuaded him to join Cinesound's Talent School. Ken G. John Fernside
John Fernside (died 27 October 1957, aged 65) was an Australian actor who worked extensively on stage and screen from the 1910s through to 1950s. He co-starred with Chips Rafferty in three Australian films of the 1940s; ''The Overlanders'' (1946), ''Bush Christmas'' (1947) and ''Eureka Stockade'' (1949). Fernside was born in Perth, Western Australia and worked his way up through the theatre. Frederick Vern
Frederick Vern was a German who was one of the leaders in the Eureka Rebellion. He helped form the Ballarat Reform League The Ballarat Reform League came into being in October 1853 and was officially constituted on 11 November 1854 at a mass meeting of miners in Ballarat, Victoria to protest against the Victorian government's mining policy and administration of the .... Charles Hotham
Captain Sir Charles Hotham (14 January 180631 December 1855)B. A. Hotham entered the navy on 6 November 1818, and had a distinguished career. He was in command of the steam sloop which ran aground in Montevideo Bay in May 1844 and showed skill and determination in getting her refloated by November. Ralph Truman
Ralph du Vergier Truman (7 May 1900 – 15 October 1977) was an English actor, usually cast as either a villain or an authority figure. He possessed a distinguished speaking voice. He was born in London, England. Truman originally studied at the Royal College of Music and was a regular performer on the radio from 1925, appearing in an estimated 5,000 broadcasts. Raffaello Carboni
Raffaello Carboni (15 December 1817 – 24 October 1875) was an Italian writer, composer and interpreter who wrote a book on the Eureka Stockade which he witnessed while living in Australia. Although only a spectator at the Eureka Rebellion he was charged with treason in the Supreme Court of Victoria, but found not guilty of the charge and released on 21 March 1855. Carboni left Australia on 18 January 1856 for Europe. After periods of travelling, he returned to Italy where he died in Rome in 1875. Biography Raffaello Carboni was born in Urbino, Italy in 1817. Dedicated to the cause of Italian nationalism, he fought with the forces of Mazzini and Garibaldi to free Italy from Austrian influence. Robert William Rede
Robert William Rede (13 July 1815 – 13 July 1904) was a member of Victoria's volunteer militia, who was remembered for his part in the Eureka Rebellion. Career Robert Rede was born at Asham's Hall, Beccles, Suffolk, a son of Ann and Thomas William Rede, a Naval officer. He spent much of his early life in France, also visiting many other European states. He arrived in Australia around 1852, at the height of the Gold Rush, and was soon digging at Forest Creek and Bendigo. He had a fair knowledge of medicine, and became popularly known as the "little doctor". He was shortly hired by J. A. Panton, resident Commissioner at Bendigo, as his assistant. He was appointed commissioner at Mount Korong and Jones's Creek, then at Ballarat. He earned a reputation as a solid administrator and was particularly successful in resolving disputed claims. Jane Barrett
Jane Barrett (1922 – 1969) was an English actress. Barrett was born in Highgate, left school aged 14 and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She worked extensively in radio, theatre and television. It was estimated she appeared in over 2000 radio sessions on the BBC and by the end of the she had appeared on the air every day for four years. Barrett made her film debut with a tiny role in ''The Citadel'', but then focused on stage, television and radio until cast in a supporting role in ''The Captive Heart''. This led to a six-year contract with the Rank Organisation. Barrett married a Danish artist, Hans Helveg, in 1947. While in Australia to make ''Eureka Stockade'' she signed a contract with the ABC to appear in several radio dramas. Ballarat Reform League
The Ballarat Reform League came into being in October 1853 and was officially constituted on 11 November 1854 at a mass meeting of miners in Ballarat, Victoria to protest against the Victorian government's mining policy and administration of the goldfields. As with the Bendigo protests the previous year (the Red Ribbon Rebellion), the primary objective of the League was to oppose the Miner's Licence. The League also strove for justice for James Scobie, a Scottish miner who had recently been murdered outside Bentley's Hotel in Eureka, and for the release of three miners who had been wrongly imprisoned for burning down the hotel. John Basson Humffray was elected secretary of the League. He urged civil disobedience to resist the government. But, when tensions boiled over on 30 November 1854, his pacifist strategy was overturned and the miners opted to use arms to fight the authorities.
