Eunos Group Representation Constituency
Eunos Group Representation Constituency (Simplified Chinese: 友诺士集选区;Traditional Chinese: 友諾士集選區) is a defunct Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the north-eastern region of Singapore. This GRC existed for the 1988 and 1991 general election before being absorbed into Aljunied GRC and the brand new East Coast GRC for the 1997 general election. Eunos GRC was won narrowly by the People's Action Party in both the 1988 and 1991 General Elections. Zulkifli Mohammed
Zulkifli bin Mohammed (born 8 August 1948) is a former Singaporean politician. A member of the ruling People's Action Party, Zulkifli was involved in politics for 14 years before retiring from politics in 1996. Early life Zulkifli studied political science at the University of Singapore and graduated with honours in 1970. Following his graduation, Zulkifli worked for Shell Eastern Petroleum. He would continue to work at the firm until his election to parliament. Although Malays were exempted from the National Service draft beginning in 1967, Zulkifli volunteered for the People's Defence Force Volunteer Unit and was an Infantry Officer between 1967 and 1977. In 1983, Zulkifli was elected as the president of Majlis Pusat, otherwise known as the Central Council of Malay Cultural Organisations. People's Action Party
The People's Action Party ( abbreviation: PAP) is a major conservative centre-right political party in Singapore and is one of the three contemporary political parties represented in Parliament, alongside the opposition Workers' Party (WP) and Progress Singapore Party (PSP). Initially founded as a traditional centre-left party in 1954, the leftist faction was soon expelled from the party in 1961 by Lee Kuan Yew in the midst of Singapore's merger with Malaysia, desiring to move the party's ideology towards the centre after its first electoral victory in 1959. 1984 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 22 December 1984. President Devan Nair dissolved parliament on 4 December 1984 on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. The result was a victory for the People's Action Party, which won 77 of the 79 seats, marking the first time since 1963 that at least one opposition candidate was elected to parliament in a general election, although the first presence of an opposition MP was in the 1981. Background In his 1983 National Day Rally speech, Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew lamented that declining birth rates and large number of graduate women remaining single or not marrying their intellectual equal could see Singapore's talent pool shrink. The PAP government then proceeded to launch the " Graduate Mothers' Scheme" to entice graduate women with incentives to get married and grant graduate mothers priority in the best schools for their third child.
