Eugène Berger
Eugène Berger (4 December 1960 – 21 January 2020) was a politician from Luxembourg. Berger studied to become a teacher, and worked in this profession from 1988 to 1994. In 1994, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of Luxembourg, Chamber of Deputies for the Democratic Party (Luxembourg), Democratic Party. He was State Secretary of the Environment from 1999 to 2004. On 1 October 1992, he became the first Luxembourger to climb Mount Everest, for which he won the title of Luxembourgish Sportsman of the Year. He had two children. When his death was announced, Luxembourg's Parliament went into recess out of respect. The Chamber of Deputies ( or simply ''D'Chamber'', , ), abbreviated to the Chamber, is the unicameral national legislature of Luxembourg. The metonym ''Krautmaart'' (French: ''Marché aux herbes'', English: "Herb Market") is sometimes used for the Chamber, after the square on which the Hôtel de la Chambre is located. The Chamber is made up of 60 seats. Deputies are elected to serve five-year terms by proportional representation in four multi-seat constituencies. Democratic Party (Luxembourg)
The Democratic Party (DP; , , ), is the major social-liberal political party in Luxembourg. One of the three major parties, the DP sits on the centre to centre-right,Dumont et al (2003), p. 412 holding moderate market liberal views combined with a strong emphasis on civil liberties, human rights, and internationalism. Founded in 1955, the party is currently led by Lex Delles. Its former president, Xavier Bettel, was the Prime Minister of Luxembourg from 2013 to 2023, leading the Bettel I and II governments in coalition with the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) and The Greens. It is the second-largest party in the Chamber of Deputies, with fourteen seats out of sixty, having won 17.8% of the vote at the 2023 general election, and has two seats in the European Parliament out of six. Mount Everest
Mount Everest (), known locally as Sagarmatha in Nepal and Qomolangma in Tibet, is Earth's highest mountain above sea level. It lies in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas and marks part of the China–Nepal border at its summit. Its height was most recently measured in 2020 by Chinese and Nepali authorities as . Mount Everest attracts many climbers, including highly experienced mountaineers. There are two main climbing routes, one approaching the summit from the southeast in Nepal (known as the standard route) and the other from the north in Tibet. While not posing substantial technical climbing challenges on the standard route, Everest presents dangers such as altitude sickness, weather, and wind, as well as hazards from avalanches and the Khumbu Icefall. The Sportsperson of the Year awards are a group of awards awarded to the most popular Luxembourgish sportsperson of the preceding year, as voted by the national sportspress. Luxembourgish ( ; also ''Luxemburgish'', ''Luxembourgian'', ''Letzebu(e)rgesch''; ) is a West Germanic language that is spoken mainly in Luxembourg. About 400,000 people speak Luxembourgish worldwide. The language is standardized and officially the national language of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. As such, Luxembourgish is different from the German language also used in the Grand Duchy.
