Eugene T. Mahoney
Eugene Thomas Mahoney (March 27, 1928 – July 15, 2004), known as "Gene," was a member of the Nebraska Legislature and long-time director of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Eugene Mahoney was born on March 27, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois. One of six children born to a Catholic family, he moved to Omaha, Nebraska, as a young boy. He was an active participant of the Boy Scouts and was an Eagle Scout. He served as an administrative assistant to Congressman Glenn Cunningham, and he worked as the Director of Public Relations at the Commercial Savings Association in Omaha, Nebraska. He was active in his community and served on the board of directors of St. Vincent De Paul Stores, St. John's Seminary Association, Q Street Merchants, the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and Citizens for Decent Literature. Bernice Labedz
Bernice R. Labedz (born Bernice R. Koziol; Sept. 19, 1919 – Nov. 15, 2008) was a member of the Nebraska Legislature from 1976 to 1993 from District 5 in Omaha, Nebraska. Appointed by Nebraska Governor J. James Exon on July 22, 1976, to fill the unexpired term of Eugene T. Mahoney, she was reelected in 1976, 1980, 1984, and 1988. She was a member of the Democratic Party. Labedz was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on September 19, 1919, one of 17 children. She attended St. Francis Catholic School in Omaha and was a graduate of Omaha South High School. On May 9, 1942, she married Stanley J. Labedz, who worked for the Omaha Police Department. She was very active in her community and served on a number of committees and boards of community organizations such as Meyer Children's Rehabilitation Institute, United Catholic Social Services, and South Omaha Christians for Life. Ashland, Nebraska
Ashland is a city in Saunders County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 2,453 at the 2010 census. History Ashland is located at the site of a low-water limestone ledge along the bottom of Salt Creek, an otherwise mud-bottomed stream that was a formidable obstacle for wagon trains on the great westward migrations of the late 1840s and 1850s. The Oxbow Trail, a variant route of the Oregon Trail, ran from Nebraska City (on the Missouri River) to Fort Kearny (on the Platte River), where it joined the main route of the Oregon Trail. The limestone bottom of Salt Creek at Ashland made it an excellent fording site. Ashland was established in 1870 and named after Ashland, the estate of Henry Clay. Today, Ashland benefits by its proximity to Interstate 80 and the cities of Omaha and Lincoln. Glenn Clarence Cunningham (September 10, 1912 – December 18, 2003) was an American Republican politician. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska on September 10, 1912 and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1935. He sold insurance for a while. From 1946 to 1948 he was a member of the Omaha board of education and a member of Omaha city council from 1947 to 1948. He was elected Mayor of Omaha from 1949 to 1954. He was a delegate to the 1948 Republican National Convention and to the 1952 Republican National Convention. He was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-fifth United States Congress and to the six succeeding Congresses serving from January 3, 1957 to January 3, 1971. Cunningham voted in favor of the Civil Rights Acts of 1957, 1960, 1964, and 1968, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, but did not vote on the 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
