Eugen Sigg
Eugen Sigg-Bächthold (16 January 1898–29 December 1994), better known as Eugen Sigg, was a Swiss rower who competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics. In 1924, he won the gold medal with the Swiss boat in the coxed four event. He was also part of the Swiss boat which won the bronze medal in the coxless four A coxless four is a rowing boat used in the sport of competitive rowing. Rowing (sport)
Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oars—one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain, called eights. There are a wide variety of course types and formats of racing, but most elite and championship level racing is conducted on calm water courses long with several lanes marked using buoys. Rowing is the act of propelling a human-powered watercraft using the sweeping motions of oars to displace water and generate reactional propulsion. Rowing is functionally similar to paddling, but rowing requires oars to be mechanically attached to the boat, and the rower drives the oar like a lever, exerting force in the ''same'' direction as the boat's travel; while paddles are completely hand-held and have no attachment to the boat, and are driven like a cantilever, exerting force ''opposite'' to the intended direction of the boat. In some strict terminologies, using oars for propulsion may be termed either "pulling" or "rowing", with different definitions for each. Where these strict terminologies are used, the definitions are reversed depending on the context. Rowing At The Summer Olympics
Rowing at the Summer Olympics has been part of the competition since its debut in the 1900 Summer Olympics. Rowing was on the program at the 1896 Summer Olympics but was cancelled due to bad weather. Only men were allowed to compete until the women's events were introduced at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal which gave national federations the incentive to support women's events and catalysed growth in women's rowing. Lightweight rowing events (which have weight-limited crews) were introduced to the games in 1996. Qualifying for the rowing events is under the jurisdiction of the World Rowing Federation. World Rowing predates the modern Olympics and was the first international sport federation to join the modern Olympic movement. 1924 European Rowing Championships
The 1924 European Rowing Championships were rowing championships held on Lake Zürich in the Swiss city of Zürich. The competition was for men only and they competed in six of the seven Olympic boat classes (M1x, M2x, M2-, M2+, M4+, M8+) as they had been rowed earlier in the summer at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris; the new Olympic boat class of coxless four (M4-) was also part of the European Rowing Championships, but the only competitor would be Switzerland and they didn't want to win the European championship by row-over.
