Ettore Simonetti
Ettore Simonetti (1857, Rome - 1909, Rome) was an Italian painter and watercolorist, who specialized in Orientalist works and historical genre scenes. Biography His father, Francesco, was a goldsmith and carver. His mother, Carolina, née Raffaelli, came from a family of mosaic artists, with a workshop in Rome. One of his ancestors, Giacomo Raffaelli, helped to develop the modern micromosaic technique. In 1869, he attended a course on geometry at the Accademia di San Luca, and was awarded a prize for perspective. Ettore was brother of the painter and antique dealer Attilio Simonetti. He was part of a group of watercolorists that included Enrico Tarenghi, Giuseppe Aureli, and Giulio Rosati. Although it would appear that they never travelled to North Africa or the Middle East, they created Orientalist works, based on photographs, other artists' illustrations, and traveler's descriptions. Giuseppe Aureli
Giuseppe Aureli (December 5, 1858 – 9 August 1929) was an Italian painter and watercolourist. His work is noted for its historical subject matter, portraits of Italian noble families as well as genre paintings and local scenes, especially work with Oriental themes. Life and work Giuseppe Aureli was born in Rome in 1858. He received his early art education at the Accademia di San Luca where he was the pupil of Pietro Gabrini and Cesare Maccari. He exhibited in various exhibitions; including: The International Exhibition of 1888 in Munich and the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago, but his Oriental works were rarely included in these early exhibitions. Having his workshop at 48 Via Margutta in Rome, Aureli was in a position to exchange ideas with the most prolific Orientalist artists at that the time. Amedeo Simonetti (8 April 1874, Genoa - 22 April 1922, Rome) was an Italian painter; known primarily for his Orientalist scenes. He was sometimes referred to by his childhood nickname, Momo. Biography He came to the career of artist late, and was first inspired by the example of his uncles, Ettore, an Orientalist painter, and Attilio, a former associate of the Spanish artist, Mariano Fortuny. After taking some introductory art lessons from Ettore, he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma with , known as "Il Grillo" (the cricket), who specialized in historical and genre scenes. He began by painting the countryside in the vicinity of Prati, a rapidly urbanizing area where the natural scenery was disappearing. Pietro Longhi (1702 or November 5, 1701 – May 8, 1785) was a Venetian painter of contemporary genre scenes of life. Biography Pietro Longhi was born in Venice in the parish of Saint Maria, first child of the silversmith Alessandro Falca and his wife, Antonia. He adopted the Longhi last name when he began to paint. He was initially taught by the Veronese painter Antonio Balestra, who then recommended the young painter to apprentice with the Bolognese Giuseppe Maria Crespi, who was highly regarded in his day for both religious and genre painting and was influenced by the work of Dutch painters. Marià Josep Maria Bernat Fortuny i Marsal (; es, Mariano José María Bernardo Fortuny y Marsal; June 11, 1838 – November 21, 1874), known more simply as Marià Fortuny or Mariano Fortuny, was the leading Spanish painter of his day, with an international reputation. His brief career encompassed works on a variety of subjects common in the art of the period, including the Romantic fascination with Orientalist themes, historicist genre painting, military painting of Spanish colonial expansion, as well as a prescient loosening of brush-stroke and color. Giulio Rosati
Giulio Rosati (Rome 1857 – Rome 1917) was an Italian painter who specialized in Orientalist and academic scenes. Biography Giulio Rosati was born in Rome in 1861 into a family of bankers and militarists. He did not follow his family's career and instead studied art at the Accademia di San Luca under Dario Querci and Francesco Podesti. He also studied with Luis Álvarez y Catalá (1836-1901), director of the Prado Museum, Madrid. He worked mainly in watercolor, and occasionally in oil, and focussed most of his entire painting career on Orientalist art. He devoted himself particularly to representations of the Maghreb, that he never visited himself. His painting, ''Oriental Scene'' was exhibited at the Exposition di Belle Arte, in Rome in 1900.
